I am sponsoring this fast-track case for Eduardo Horvath. Case timer is
set to expire on 4/9/07

This case defines :
   - platform name and banner for Glendale system
   - Bit definitions for io_device_results for Glendale (imported from
FWARC/2007/180)
   - a new value for Neptune/N2 "phy-type" property (imported from
FWARC/2007/288)

One pager has been copied to case materials directory. Updated Neptune
and N2 bindings are also available in the same location.

Release Binding:
    firmware: minor/micro firmware release
    OS: minor/micro/patch OS release.

1. Introduction
   1.1. Project/Component Working Name:

	Glendale Platform Name Binding

   1.2. Name of Document Author/Supplier:

	Eduardo Horvath

   1.3. Date of This Document:

	08/28/2007

1.4. Name of Major Document Customer(s)/Consumer(s):
1.4.1. The PAC or CPT you expect to review your project:
        HEES PAC
1.4.2. The ARC(s) you expect to review your project:
        FWARC
1.4.3. The Director/VP who is "Sponsoring" this project:
        N/A
1.4.4. The name of your business unit:
        Software

   1.5. Email Aliases:
        1.5.1. Responsible Manager: gary.hethcoat@sun.com
        1.5.2. Responsible Engineer: eduardo.horvath@sun.com

2. Project Summary
   2.1. Project Description:

This project registers the "banner-name" and root node "name" property
values used on the Glendale platforms. OpenBoot extracts these values from
the guest MDs and creates the properties for Solaris to use.

Changes are required to the vBSC/POST interface to allow POST to return
information relevent to I/O devices found on Glendale.

A new "phy-type" property needs to be provided in the NIU machine
descriptor device node to indicate the PHY can be hot swapped and
must be probed by the device driver.

3. Business Summary
   3.1. Problem Area:

Although marketing (and not engineering) dictates these property values,
        they constitute a cross-consolidation software/firmware interface, and
therefore must be registered with an ARC body.

4. Technical Description:
    4.1. Details:

     4.1.1 OBP properties
	Glendale will have the following
root node "name" and "banner-name" properties.

        "name" S
           Type: Prop-encoded-string
Contents: Root node name property for Glendale
           Value: "SUNW,Sun-Blade-T6320"

        "banner-name" S
           Type: Prop-encoded-string
           Contents: Banner name for Glendale
Value: "Sun Blade T6320 Server Module"

Glendale will have the following value in the NIU and Neptune
NIU "network" device node "phy-type" properties.

	"phy-type"
	   Type:	Prop-encoded-string
Contents:	Sun private property to indicate the type of
			the physical layer
	   Value:	"hotplug"
Indicates the PHY device may change without
warning and must be probed properly by the
			driver.

    4.1.2 vBSC/POST interface

     io_device_results
	io_device_results
These words contain a "0" in each bit for an io device that failed POST.
Bits corresponding to devices which are untested must be set to 1.
Unused bits must be set to 1.
This word is only valid when post_exit_reason == 0.

	Bit definitions are as follows:

	   device bit

	   XAUI_PORT0 0
	   XAUI_PORT1 1
	   PCISWITCH 2
	   GBE 6
	   PCI-BRIDGE 8
	   REM 9
	   USB0 10
	   USB1 11
	   DISPLAY 12
	   unused [3..5,7,12..63]

    4.2. Interfaces:

        Imported Interfaces :

        Interface Classification	Comments

        "name" Standard	FWARC/1998/392
						(Standard IEEE 1275 property)

        "banner-name" Stable FWARC/1998/392
					   	(Legacy property)

	io_device_results	Uncommitted	FWARC/2007/180

"phy-type" Evolving	OpenBoot and MD node
						property as defined by
						FWARC/2006/556

        Exported Interfaces :

        "SUNW,Sun-Blade-T6320"
                                Uncommitted	"name" property value

        "Sun Blade T6320 Server Module"
				Uncommitted	"banner-name" property value

	io_device_results
				Uncommitted	Post results bitmask values

"hotplug" Uncommitted	Value of "phy-type" property
in NIU and Neptune device node.

Instead of 'hotplug' can we just modify the driver binding to state that
the absence of this property means the driver must properly probe for
the phy type? If a future implementation does not want to support
hotplug but has interchangeable PHYs, 'hotplug' becomes a misnomer.

If that's not palatable, how open are you to changing the name to
something else like 'undefined' or 'removable'.

I don't really care, but the Solaris team specifically requested a
special "hotplug" device type.

Is there a reference for the post results
and io_device_results? (case reference to the
interface that's being changed, which I assume
is the post/vbsc interface?)

If that's in the case, I missed it. If not,
please make sure it's complete.

I also don't like overloading phy-type
to indicate that it's changeable. Typically
one would expect the type of values that
are in the original case. How about a
boolean property like hot-swappable-phy
or something like that? If it's boolean,
the presence of the property means that
the attribute exists, and the absence
means the attribute doesn't exist.

Thanks,
-David

Sure, I will update the 1-pager adding information about the FWARC case
in section 4.1.2
This info is available in interface table though (section 4.2).

Eduardo is discussing this with the project team. We will update the
spec accordingly.

The latest S11 driver will probe the phy. However we want the driver
starts a timer
to keep on probing the phy only if this special phy type is there as
we need to
differ it from an error condition.

Also, there is new product called Monza (N2). In the
Monza case, the driver does not own the N2/NIU PHY.

If you meant a different phy from a different vendor, the driver will
be able to
handle as the driver will base on the vendor device ID read back from
the MDIO interface to program PHY accordingly. This special phy to me
is only
a place holder to tell driver not to treat it as an error case.

If possible, I prefer to use "removal".

Based on the comments, the onepager has been updated as follows:

 - Added a new optional "hot-swappable-phy" property in NIU MD node
and in OBP device node.
Presence of this property would indicate that the phy is hotswappable.
 - Removed "hotplug" type from "phy-type" property.
 - Added a note to section 4.1.2 referring to VBSC/POST interface FWARC
case.
 - Updated the interface table.

Updated 1-pager --
http://sac.eng/Archives/CaseLog/arc/FWARC/2007/494/materials/onepager.txt

Also updated n2-niu-binding.txt and Neptune_binding.txt accordingly in
the materials directory.

Regards,
Sunit

Based on the comments, the onepager has been updated as follows:<br>
  <br>
&nbsp;-&nbsp; Added a new optional "hot-swappable-phy"&nbsp;&nbsp; property in NIU MD node
and in OBP device node.<br>
&nbsp; &nbsp; Presence of this property would indicate that the phy is
hotswappable.<br>
&nbsp;-&nbsp; Removed "hotplug" type from "phy-type" property.<br>
&nbsp;-&nbsp; Added a note to section 4.1.2 referring to VBSC/POST interface
FWARC case.<br>
&nbsp;-&nbsp; Updated the interface table.<br>

Updated 1-pager --
