I am sponsoring this case for Mir Jamal Hyder.

This case defines :
   - platform name and banner for Monza system
   - Bit definitions for io_device_results for Monza (imported from
FWARC/2007/180)
   - a new Monza specific MD node property ("CP3260-uPD720101") to
indicate that
OpenBoot/FCode driver needs to program non-default clock frequency
for the NEC USB
     controller.

One pager is attached and also copied to case materials directory:

http://sac.eng/Archives/CaseLog/arc/FWARC/2007/526/materials/Monza_platform_onepager.txt

Case timer is set to expier on 9/18/07.

Release Binding:
    firmware: minor/micro firmware release
    OS: minor/micro/patch OS release.

2. Project Summary
   2.1. Project Description:

This project registers the "banner-name" and root node "name" property
values used on the Monza platform. OpenBoot extracts these values
from the guest MDs and creates the properties for Solaris to use.

Changes are required to the vBSC/POST interface to allow POST to return
information relevant to I/O devices found on Monza.

A new "CP3260-uPD720101" property needs to be provided in the USB
machine descriptor device node to indicate to the fcode driver that
the external clock speed for USB 2.0 host controller uPD720101 is 48Mhz
and so that the driver will program the device specific config register
EXT2 at offset 0xe4 appropriately. The device supports 2 different clock
speeds for the external oscillator i.e 30 Mhz and 48 Mhz, 30 Mhz being
the default setting in EXT2 register.

3. Business Summary
   3.1. Problem Area:

The one pager provides information about properties and interfaces
provided by Monza at the system firmware level, which must be registered
	with FWARC.

4. Technical Description:
    4.1. Details:

     4.1.1 OBP properties
Monza will have the following root node "name" and
	"banner-name" properties.

        "name" S
           Type: Prop-encoded-string
Contents: Root node name property for Monza
           Value: "SUNW,Netra-CP3260"

        "banner-name" S
           Type: Prop-encoded-string
           Contents: Banner name for Monza
           Value: "Netra CP3260"

    4.1.2 vBSC/POST interface

FWARC/2007/180 defines the interface between vBSC and POST for Huron
platform. POST returns the status of each component, that it tested,
	in io_device_results field.

This case imports that interface and modifies the io_device_results
bit format as per Monza platform hardware configuration.

	io_device_results for Monza :

These words contain a "0" in each bit for an io device that failed POST.
Bits corresponding to devices which are untested must be set to 1.
Unused bits must be set to 1.
This word is only valid when post_exit_reason == 0.

	Bit definitions are as follows:

	   device bit

	   XAUI_PORT0 0
	   XAUI_PORT1 1
	   PCISWITCH 2
	   GBE0 6
	   GBE1 7
	   PCI-BRIDGE 8
           GBE2 13
           USB 14
	   RTM 15
	   unused [16..63]

     4.1.3 "CP3260-uPD720101" MD Node Property

The NEC USB 2.0 controller uPD720101 on Monza uses a external clock
speed of 48 Mhz which is non-default value for the controller.
The default setting being 30 Mhz external clock. This is a eeprom
configurable option. But due to monza hardware implementation, there is
no eeprom present for the NEC USB 2.0 controller. Hence OpenBoot
must have some mechanism of determining that it should be using
the non-default value and hence the "CP3260-uPD720101" MD node
property is provided in the USB MD node.

    Name Tag Req'd? Description
   ----------------------------------------------------------------------
CP3260-uPD720101 PROP_VAL Optional The presence of this property
					  indicates to the fcode driver
to program EXT2 register in NEC
                                          uPD720101 USB 2.0 for a external
                                          clock speed of 48 Mhz.

    4.2. Interfaces:

        Imported Interfaces :

        Interface Classification	Comments

        "name" Standard	FWARC/1998/392

					   	(Legacy property)

	io_device_results	Uncommitted	FWARC/2007/180

	USB MD node Evolving	FWARC/2006/556

       Exported Interfaces :

I just wanted to highlight that this case sets a precedent for how FCode
driver hacks are enabled/disabled in the vbsc based on board/system
type/revision. This implementation creates a name, value pair property
and modifies the FCode driver behaivor based on the existence of this
property in the device's MD node. Another suggested fix by Steve Kelly
was to create a comma separated string property (something like
"fcode-driver-flags") which the FCode driver could use. I slightly
prefer that implementation; does anybody have any strong opinions one
way or the other?

I like that too. This way instead of having random property names we
have one
property name which is defined to contain one or more flags which FCode can
use at run time. So with this approach the property to be defined is,
"fcode-driver-flags"
and the value would be "CP3260-uPD720101".

I actually don't like the CP3260 in the property name or the value. Why
can't this be
generic? In other words, why can't it be just "clock-freq-48mhz"? This is
clear and driver can set an appropriate registers to set 48mhz frequency.
I understand that this is a "hack" but that does not mean we populate MD or
sources with such a name. With this case we are adding a way to override
a property or setting which driver may set using other external
registers or otherwise.

Further, what would driver do if both the MD node property and the EEPROM
exists in a system? Which one takes the precedence? I would say MD node
since this way we can over-write what is in EEPROM. Lets clarify that
MD node
will always override the driver default behavior.

Because it isn't a generic clock frequency. It is a specific
selection of the crystal vs. oscillator bit in the vendor-private
areas of the NEC uPD720101 USB HCA chip as misconfigured on the
CP3260 system. It's not a generic thing, it's explicitly one
special-purpose bit on one chip on one platform. If we wanted
a name reflecting the function of that bit, it would be
crystal vs. oscillator, not the frequency.

Note that going with "fcode-driver-flags" makes the code using the
result more complicated. Rather than a get-property and if/else,
it's going to be a get-property,if,parse,string-compare,loop.

The property tells the driver what to do. He sets the bit in FCode.
The eeprom (in the case a chip may have an eeprom which directly
affects hardware) may or may not have told the hardware to do
something, it's irrelevant for the purposes of the driver - it
will still do the action indicated by the MD.

Oh, by the way - the reason I've insisted on having the
platform name in either the property name or value is
to ensure that anything related to this hack expresses
the limits of what it applies to. Once CP3260 (Monza) is
obsolete, the code is obsolete - and we don't have to
maintain mystery code in the driver until the end of time.

Particularly since in this case we're talking about a
generic USB driver including code specific to one vendor's
chip, for something that we won't see again (the only
reason we are doing it is because there is too little
time to fix the board).

I don't like the fcode-driver-flags idea either.

The precedent (which is not really a precedent) is that
a property defined in the MD can be used by the FCode
program to modify its behavior.

2007/496 tightened up the definitions of the vendor
specific FCodes used for looking up MD nodes and MD
properties in the MD node.
