In a meeting we recently had about a future driver for a PMC
SAS HBA some of these issues were discussed. My take on this
issue is as follows, and it goes way back to the Leadville
days:

The original Sun FCAL HBAs (soc+) only handled the fibre-channel
protocol. FC encapsulation of SCSI packets was handled in the
sf driver. This forced us to expose the port in the device tree.

The Leadville stack was designed around this feature as a way
to handle multiple protocols, such as TCP/IP over FCAL. When
we started to see devices like the ones from QLogic which are
really native SCSI controllers that happen to use FCAL as a
transport layer, a lot of work went into exposing the FCAL
ports so the devices could fit into the Leadville stack.

For SAS, we have 3 protocols that we might want to support:

SSP	for SCSI packets
STP	for SATA/IDE packets
SMP	for management packets

Now STP has generally been deprecated in favor of the SAT
protocol which uses SSP. Most SAS HBAs handle SSP and STP
natively, so the only packets we're really concerned about
are SMP ones to discover fabrics, etc. Those HBAs hide
most of the details of the fabric topology from the driver,
and extracting this information is difficult.

In future, we may see devices that only transport native
SAS packets, rather than taking SCSI packets and encapsulating
them within SAS packets. In that case it may be necessary to
do SCSI to SAS encapsulation in firmware, as well as fabric
discovery, etc. That would be a good justification for exposing
the SAS initiator port in the OBP tree. But I think we shouldn't
do this for HBAs with firmware that handles the SCSI encapsulation
itself.

As far as fc/leadville is concerned, we didn't
want the fp node either, but we made a concession
to the leadville folks.

It's not there because we need the node. Leadville
needed to have the node, and it was already far
along in development. Making them change it would
have affected their product schedules.

I was part of that decision, and I've always
regretted it. It was really the only way out
at the time.

So that's enough of the history lesson, but
it explains why we allowed the fp node at
the time. (I think it also had to do with
being able to layer different protocols on
top of fc.)

We don't have that issue with this stuff.

If we need to expose the port# or phy# or
whatever, we can do that without an extra
device node, if we have to.

This is for the inception review.

1. Need more info on the synthetic address format
for sata devices. (How is it constructed, why is
    it guaranteed to be unique?)

2. I still don't understand the PP,lun form of
    the unit address.

    - How does the phy + lun uniquely identify a
      target? Shouldn't it be PP,w<sas-target-address>[,lun] ?

    - I'm not sure that the phy# makes sense in the unit
address. When I read the sas spec, it said that sw
can assign phys to ports in different ways and the same
phy can be used with one or more ports. Doesn't the logical
port number make more sense from both a connectivity point
of view and a user-friendly point of view? In either case,
if the admin changes the configuration of the port, the
pathnames can change. Either way is not particularly
friendly since there doesn't seem to be a way to label
      port numbers on the connector.

3. Is there a transition plan for existing sas firmware
and OS drivers? Are we actually going to change the
way that existing sas devices already in the field
report themselves and create problems for the user
and the OS in this case? This needs to be considered
and covered. For plug-in devices, I would imagine that
they would continue to behave as they do today, unless
the admin decides to upgrade the firmware on the plug-in
card. For on-board devices, we probably need to make sure
that we're not just arbitrarily changing the behavior of
existing devices unless the admin decides that they want
to do that since the device pathnames and drivers will
change. How will the project manage this?

-David

Here are few issues to be discussed at the meeting today.

1. In the specification section 2.2, definition of SASAddress
have typos. Remove "name" and "followings" from the first
line of the description. Also, replace "format" with the
    "address" in the second line.

2. Section 4.1.1, "local-wwid" property.

I don't see this property in the interface table.

The value of this property is derived from the System MAC address.

Supernova's POR is to eliminate System MAC address from their
system. There have been discussions in this area but if they
want to support SCSI SAS on their system then they will either
need system MAC address or we need to use some other MAC address.

3. In Interface table, exported interfaces, comments for "scsi-sas",
    replace "type" with "device_type".

My comments on the unit address issue - The issue I'm concerned with is
that under section 3.1 there are two unit address formats defined, with
ambiguity on which form is canonical. The spec currently says the second
form "is useable" for directly attached disks, but leaves ambiguous on
whether it's canonical for that case. Indeed, as of last friday, there has been
exploration on adding an NVRAM switch to select between forms of address.

My previous understanding had been that the SASAddress representation
was canonical, any time an address was produced (e.g., by encode-unit),
it would be in the canonical form. Period. Since that appears to no
longer be the case, we need to specify the precise algorithm by which
the decision is made to generate the alternate form of address, and that
algorithm *must* be followed by both Solaris and OBP. Always.
