I am sponsoring this self-review case for Eric Blanchard. This case
defines a new "phy-type"
property value for 1G Copper Phy for NIU and Neptune.

Case one-pager is attached. Updated NIU and Neptune bindings are copied
to case materials
directory.

    	1.5.2. Responsible Engineer: Eric.Blanchard@sun.com

	1.5.3. Interest List: tenaya-sw@sun.com

2. Project Summary
   2.1. Project Description:
Tenaya is a N2 based rackmount server. Tenaya uses a new ethernet
controller that takes the SerDes output of the N2 processor as input
and exports 1GB copper ethernet. It exports solely 1GB speed over the
copper Ethernet. This case updates FWARC/2006/566 and FWARC/2007/288
to define an additional "phy-type" property value for 1G Copper Phy.

   2.2. Risks and Assumptions:
If this property value is not defined, NIU driver(nxge) do not
understand tenaya configuration and will attempt to initialize
	the PHY(and fail).

3. Business Summary
   3.1. Problem Area:
Without this property, nxge driver doesn't know how to initialize
	the physical layer on Tenaya.

   3.2. Market/Requester:

   3.3. Business Justification:

   3.4. Competitive Analysis:

   3.5. Opportunity Window/Exposure:

3.6. How will you know when you are done?:
When the OS driver initialize according to the "phy-type" defined.

4. Technical Description:
    4.1. Details:

To initialize the internal SerDes for data communication over xaui
a new property values for "phy-type" is defined. The current set of
property values are listed in FWARC/2007/288. The additional "phy-type"
value for 1G Copper Phy is defined below.

	"phy-type"
	   Type:	Prop-encoded-string
Contents:	Sun private property to indicate the type of
			the physical layer
	   Value:	"gsdc" for 1G Copper

    4.2. Bug/RFE Number(s):
		TBD

    4.3. In Scope:

	=====================================================================

"phy-type"	Evolving OpenBoot and MD node
						property as defined by
						FWARC/2006/556 and modified
						by FWARC/2007/288

	4.5.2 Exported Interfaces:

Why don't we just use the "hot-swappable-phy" property defined in FWARC
2007/494
and let the NIU driver probe the PHY dynamically over MDIO?

I thought we were eschewing the phy-type property in favor of having the
drivers manually probe the PHY to determine the type. Is there something
about the new hardware that precludes us from doing it?

The BCM5482 is an on board device. I don't think using the
"hot-swappable-phy" property should be used in an on board device.

My next question is, if we want to have the driver probe the device id,
and consequentially the device phy-type, using MDIO is it ok to exclude
or have incorrect phy-type properties?

I think we still need to define a new phy-type value or expand the
definition of one of the existing ones.

Thanks,
-Eric

I think the term "ethernet controller" used in this sentence is mis-leading,

Tenaya uses a new ethernet controller that takes the SerDes output of
the N2 processor as input and exports 1GB copper ethernet.

You should say "ethernet transceiver" instead.

Thanks,
Jamal

I've updated the materials based on some peoples suggestions. While
doing this I also noticed the niu spec is missing some changes that were
added by other cases. My latest spec includes all of the missing changes
that I found.

I'm summarizing key points of an off-line discussion so it gets archived
in the mail section of the case and so other people can provide input.

Its been requested that we move away from niu and neptune drivers that
rely on phy-type. Part of the reason to do this is the phy-type is
unnecessary information in the md. The type of phy that is being used
can be inferred by querying the part number of phy device. Resistance to
adding this new phy-type value to the niu spec comes from the opinion
that phy-type should be degraded, therefore we shouldn't be adding new
values.

Even with the following resistance, the software team developing the new
driver is still pursuing the addition of the new phy-type value. The
reasons are the current spec'ed interface for the niu still has the
phy-type listed as a required property, and the new phy-type value
requested is an accurate description of a phy interface that is not
described in the current spec.

Removing the drivers dependency of phy-type values can be done, but it
requires making a change to the current driver that requires a bunch of
regression testing. The new hardware being added is part of a platform
project that has an accelerated schedule. Trying to degrade the reliance
on phy-type will cause extra effort to be done on a project that already
has a tight schedule.

The software team doesn't disagree that removing the dependency on
phy-type is a good thing and should be done. We just don't think this
platform, an N2 platform who's solaris development needs to be finished
before the end of the month, should be the platform to pioneer these new
changes.

If I haven't captured everything, or if I got something wrong, please
correct me!

Thanks,
-Eric
