Project Summary
Project Description:

The Visual Panels project will produce a UI that will make
configuring Solaris services easier for both desktop users
and "casual" system administrators. Visual Panels will
enable desktop users and developers to perform common
system and service administration on their local machine.

Technical Description:
Details:

There are three major pieces to the implementation of
the Visual Panels project:

The first is the UI itself, which will be implemented in
Java using the Swing toolkit.

The second is the configuration management, which will
be based primarily on SMF. Configuration will be made
accessible to consumers (initially only the Visual Panels
UI) using Java Management Extensions (JMX) MBeans. These
MBeans will be served using the bundled Cacao common
agent container. Most configuration will be accessible
using a generic SMF MBean. Configuration which cannot
be represented in SMF (e.g. name services, ZFS) will
be accessed using technology-specific MBeans.

The third is the configurable content itself. This
consists of the work necessary to expose the
configuration via the second component, and
the UI work necessary to expose the configuration
to the user in the first. The project team will
pursue creating and integrating a sizable amount
of content for configurable Solaris technologies.

Here are answers to Gary's questions:

   gw-1 20Q 15.10 enabling Cacao
	  * Is this done in a "local" mode to meet SBD and the SMF Policy?
	    http://opensolaris.org/os/community/arc/policies/SMF-policy/
I don't seem to find the service manifest for Cacao

Cacao, when enabled, defaults to a local-only mode.

I believe Cacao currently ships without a service; one is created
when Cacao is enabled for the first time (using cacaoadm).

     (/usr/lib/cacao/lib/tools/template/startup/svc_cacao.xml appears to
be the mold in which Cacao services are cast.)

   gw-2 Spec p 3 Accessing VP
	  * Does "login as a different user" mean login as a Role?
	  * Is the list of Roles the user can assume ala SMC, Trusted
	    Solaris or Trusted Extensions?

It currently means "log in as a different user", though I suspect it
     should mean more :)

	  * In the login context, where and how is the authentication
	    audited?

I don't think I understand the question. How is the "login context"
different from the PAM authentication case you ask about below?

   gw-3 Spec p 3 Remote access
	  * username and password seems unfriendly, could/should Kerberos be
	    applied here?

I don't believe Cacao currently supports Kerberos (and can't speak to
the Cacao team's future plans). Unfortunately, I don't think Cacao
offers anything in the authentication spectrum between using a
user/role with password at one end and Sun Java System Access Manager
     at the other.

   gw-4 Spec p 12 PAM authentication
	  * This doesn't seem to meet the SAC PAM policy which predates
	    Cacao.
	    http://opensolaris.org/os/community/arc/policies/PAM/
LSARC, how will this be remedied? Embedded_su seems to have
solved this all in a CLI fashion.

I assume this issue is intended more for LSARC than the project team.

	  * Is the authenticated user's process running in the full user
	    context?

I'm afraid I don't understand the question. What do you mean by
"running in the full user context"?

	  * How is the SAC Solaris Audit policy (around authentication met)?
	    http://opensolaris.org/os/community/arc/policies/audit-policy/

The Cacao daemon should be auditing the PAM authentication.

   gw-5 Spec p 13 Authorization
	  * How does this fit with svc.configd doing the authorization
enforcement for the authenticated user? Is what I read here
just a filter so the user doesn't see things that configd
won't permit? How are the two kept in sync?
	  * How is the SAC Solaris Audit policy met?
	    http://opensolaris.org/os/community/arc/policies/audit-policy/

Though we have, in the process of considering all options, considered
the possibility of interpreting the SMF authorization properties in
the mbean (filtering, as you say), the many problems introduced by
such an approach would make it extraordinarily difficult to implement
correctly and equally expensive to maintain. Instead, we plan on
using a process imbued with the appropriate authorizations and
auditing context as a proxy, relying on the authorization and (soon)
     auditing built-in to svc.configd.

   gw-6 Spec in general
	  * How does Visual Panels meet the Solaris Audit policy in general?
	    http://opensolaris.org/os/community/arc/policies/audit-policy/
svc.configd enforce authorization and audit requests when
made in the user (roles) context. pfexec will do the same
	    for CLIs.

To the greatest extent possible, we intend to rely on the interfaces
we consume to compute authorization and perform any necessary
     auditing.

   gw-7 Spec p 14-16
	  * How are these Panels RBAC driven?
	  * gw-6

Access needed by panels whose configuration is found in SMF will be
governed by the RBAC authorizations specified in the repository.
This covers most of the listed panels. File sharing, due to a likely
usage of the consolidation-private (and more universal) libshare
instead direct usage of the project-private (and, alas, limited) SMF
representation, will require investigation on our part before we can
     answer this question completely.

   Dave
