I think that contracts are too heavyweight a process to stabilize Volatile interfaces between low-support F/OSS components. I am concerned, however, that if someone upgrades lcms that the things it depends on may not get sufficiently tested. If all its consumers are in the same consolidation, then there's at least some control on whether they all build correctly, but I imagine that testing may very well be limited, if it exists at all. I'm not sure if there's anything that can be done to force testing, but one thing that the contracts at least purport to do is to identify consumers of an interface, and a person to contact if things go wrong or information is needed. Perhaps we could keep track of these interfaces, what consolidation they belong to, and who consumes them (and what consolidation those consumers live in)? The consolidation name would enable people to look up the c-team lead or gatekeeper as someone who might be responsible (or could point at an appropriate person). It could be suggested to the c-teams that this information be kept along with the components as well, so that developers have the information more readily available, and are more likely to see it and take action on it. Liblcms is valuable to other projects as well. For example, ImageMagick can make use of it. It makes sense to me. However, I'll note that this is precisely the kind of question we have to refrain from asking in ARC reviews. It's about a feature we have no business changing, doing so would make more work for anyone maintaining the component for Solaris, and is exactly the sort of thing that makes people believe the ARC is too difficult to work with and provides no value. Those of us who are Sun employees can pick nits on our own software (and the software we consider crucial to Sun's success) if we must, but this isn't ours. We can only review the points of integration with the system -- the actual engineering work that's being done to make it a part of Solaris. Everything else is out of bounds. We evaluate them based on the consolidations across which the dependency exists. In other words, better ways to deal with this issue are: - Just raise the stability level of the library to an appropriate level, given the consumers involved. Unless Sun provides frequent and regular updates automatically to support the latest digital cameras, including 'dcraw' in Solaris is likely to disappoint--new cameras are released on a constant basis, and a RAW-file converter must be constantly updated to keep pace. IMO, 'dcraw' seems inappapriate for Solaris, unless there is a plan in place to keep pace on the latest cameras. By way of comparison, Apple provides RAW support in Aperture, Preview and internal libraries, and they have to issue an update once a quarter or so. Right now, I have a new camera, and it's not yet supported (though it soon should be). This becomes annoying; any tool that isn't aggressively updated gets abandoned. In short, failure to aggressively update raw-file processing software frequently leads to it being out of date within a year. To me, that's *much* more important than concerns about whether the interface is 'volatile' or something else--a square peg in a round hole issue IMO. Bottom line: unless we have a team committed to frequent and regular updates, I vote against seeing this included in Solaris *at all*. I could be persuaded otherwise provided that there is a *funded* and well-articulated plan for aggressively keeping 'dcraw' current. The issue with it being Volatile is that nothing can use it. Such a simple single source program could be a good test case to clear some crud out of the plumbing of Sun's processes and speed things up. But I'm not convinced frequent updates absolutely crucial to the usefulness of dcraw. It still reads the formats for a majority of existing cameras out there as well as Adobe's DNG (some of us have cameras dating back 5 or 6 years which can write RAW format(s). I'd be interested in hearing about new cameras the latest dcraw doesn't support. What I'm more concerned about is the potential for stepping on someone else's IP when companies such as Sony and Nikon seem to be intentionally "encrypting" their white balance channel so you have to use their software. If there are IP risks or format change intended to break 3rd party image readers, it might be safer to drop support for these brands even though I'm sure it will lead to complaints. It's dumping all the information the sensor receives into the file, hence when new sensors get in the market their RAW files are different than the supported ones. I'm very impressed how projects like dcraw, and my personal favorite ufraw can keep up to date. The vast majority of camaras that are not newer than a few months (or just the same sensor as a previous model) are supported. I personally, not see any problem maintaining the code of this apps. But I would suggest adding ufraw to the team. ;) Very useful and easy, specially when used as a GIMP plugin. Ufraw uses dcraw internally. Since dcraw isn't a shared library, ufraw has to compile in new versions of the dcraw source code. It might be nice to fix that so we don't end up maintaining both the dcraw embedded within ufraw and the dcraw stand alone.
