2. Project Summary
   2.1. Project Description:
RealPlayer retrieves audio, video, text, animation and other media to
your desktop by using modern streaming technology. The media files, or
clips, you play are specially created so that they are transfered to your
desktop in much smaller pieces that are ready to be used. Therefore you
do not have to wait for the whole video file to download before you begin
to enjoy it. With RealPlayer, the video plays as your Player receives
    the information.

4. Technical Description:
    4.1. Details:

RealPlayer plays a wide variety of media both locally and over the
    Internet.

    Filetype Plays
    ---------------- -----------------------------------------------------
RM, RPM, RA, RAM RealAudio/RealVideo streamed content
RT Real Text streamed text formats
RP RealPix streamed GIF and JPG ('j-peg') images
GIF, JPG Stand alone JPG and GIF images
SMIL, SMI SMIL formatted (multiple datatype layout) files
    VIV, VIVO Vivo video files
AU 'Legacy' sound files--older but prevalent file-types
    ASF NetShow files (some)
OGG Vorbis, Ogg, Theora Open Source streaming technology
    WAV Windows Raw audio format
    AIFF Apple's Raw audio format

    The included codecs are:

o Theora (content must be encoded with Alpha3 or greater)
    o Vorbis/Ogg
    o Basic SMIL 2.0
    o H263
    o RealPix
    o RTSP streaming with RTP
    o HTTP streaming
    o RealText
    o RealEvents
    o RealAudio, RealVideo
o Uncompressed audio (wav, au, aiff)

This project includes the standalone player and the plugin that is
necessary for Firefox. This version of RealPlayer is based upon
    the OpenSource Helix community project.

Compare to the previous release of Realplayer 10, Realplayer 11 offers
three new features, namely superbuffer, auto bandwidth detection and
    playlist. The supperbuffer feature allow pausing of live streams;
Auto bandwidth detection ensures better streaming experience; and
playlist feature enable the user to create and play the playlist.

Irene,

The package SUNWrealplayer should be Uncommitted.
The directory /usr/li/RealPlay should be Private.
Does the player transfer all the configuration information
from $HOME/.realplayerrc to $HOME/.config/real/realplayerrc?

Thanks,

John

It is very easy to migrate all the configuration info from realplay 10
to realplayer 11.

just copy $HOME/.realplayerrc to $HOME/.config/real/realplayerrc.

How are users expected to know to do this? Is this explained in the
documentation or the man page? Wouldn't it make sense for
RealPlayer 11 to just automatically migrate the user configuration
rather than expecting the user to figure out where to copy the file.
Most RealPlayer users probably don't even know they have a
$HOME/.realplayerrc file, would they?

I notice the existing realplay.1 manpage talks about the
$HOME/.realplayrrc file, so this manpage should be updated when we
go to RealPlayer 11.

Jerry,

To me this is a popup dialog that says something to the
effect of 'Would you like to migrate your preferences
from RealPlayer X.Y.Z?' Then the end user has a choice.
Firefox does this when we migrate from Mozilla. This
is a trivial thing to do and gives a whole lot of customer
satisfaction. I would think that the upstream community
would find this type of change valuable.

Thanks,

John

Can Realplayer 11 automatically move $HOME/.realplayerrc to
$HOME/.config/real/realplayerrc so that the customers don't have to do
it manually?
If not, I think we might need to add this feature.

I don't understand your comment. The concern is that the user may have
their own preferences in the old file. There should be some mechanism
for automatically moving the old configuration to the new configuration
location, if at all possible.

For example, perhaps realplayer should detect if the user has an old
configuration file, and then pop-up a dialog asking the user if they
want to migrate their configuration file. If yes, then the
configuration file is moved to the new location. If no, then the
configruation file is probably moved to a different name so the
pop-up dialog doesn't show up next time.

Your statement that this isn't an issue because the new realplayer
configuration file is installed to the right location doesn't seem
to address this concern at all.

Does this make more sense?

Brian

Brian:
Yes, I may midsunderstand the question here. To solve the problem is
fairly simply. We may add some script in realplay(which actually a batch
file) to detect whether ~/.realplayerc exist, if so, we simply move the
file to ~/config/real/realplayerrc.

Wouldn't it be better to copy instead of move so that users who use the
same home directory with multiple OS versions still have their preferences
with the older releases too?

As an implementation note, you might not want to move it, in case the
user's home directory is shared with systems where realplayer hasn't been
upgraded yet, and would expect the config file in its original place. A
copy is probably more appropriate.
