Can the two facilities co-exist as long as they don't touch the same log files? I think this is really a recipe for confusion and disaster. I don't think having two functionally equivalent log file rotating mechanisms is the right thing to do. At all. Hmm... we already have logadm to rotate logs in Solaris today. Logcheck would be more interesting. We don't have a built-in utility to scan logs for issues. I have a pkg'd version of logcheck, if anyone is interested.

I wonder if by "stable" you actually mean "unmaintained"?  Sunfreeware
is certainly not the originating community for logrotate, that's just
somewhere the source file exists.  As Sun's role is to "monitor the open
source project", do they even know where it is?  The logrotate utility
doesn't appear to have a "homepage" on the world wide web, being
maintained in Red Hat's CVS tree only so far as I can see [2].

I stopped using logrotate when I moved to Solaris 9 and transitioned to logadm. The big difference I see between the tools is the configuration file syntax(logadm.conf is simpler) and the fact that logadm.conf contains the time stamp info. Other than that, the functionality is the same. I do think that having two tools that have the same results is a bit confusing. Logadm does a good job. This version is now in the materials directory. I've updated the one-pager (here) and the foss checklist (in the materials dir) to reflect the fedora source as the upstream source for logrotate. The Debian version is what was known at the time the OSR was filed, and appears to be nearly up to date with the fedora version, so we'll stick with that. We've indicated that future tracking should follow the fedora version. Dean ------------- 1. Background Logrotate rotates log files and archives them in a central location. Logrotate is externally maintained Free Open Source Software (FOSS). Sun's role with this project is to port and monitor the open source project. For additional information about the project or originating community, see [1]. Upstream code changes are not currently needed or anticipated because the project already compiles and runs under Solaris and the version being integrated is stable. Logrotate is licensed under GPLv2 or later, though Sun will only distribute it under version 2. See OSR #8589 [2] for more information. This project will port logrotate 3.7.1 from the Debian source, as this matches the information which was known at the time of the OSR. The Debian source appears to be fed from (and is only slightly behind at this time) the Fedora source [1] and future updates will track Fedora. This project requests a minor release binding. 2. Architecture Logrotate reads the configuration file to determine which log files it should handle and what policies should be used for each log file. Based on the given rotation policy, a logfile may be renamed with a number added as a suffix. The policy can be used specify the date instead of the number, and also can specify a file extension suffix to be added to the rotated log. The policy can also specify that the rotated log be compressed, i.e. gzip. The policy can also tell logrotate to execute a command after the rotation; for example, to send SIGHUP to a daemon so it starts a new logfile. 3. I see the package includes a /etc/logrotate.conf file. Since that's one place the admin would have to look if they use this, how about adding commentary in that file pointing out that logadm is the built-in log manager in OpenSolaris and it's active by default, so if you choose to configure and enable logrotate, be sure to either disable logadm or make sure they don't manage the same files. -- Jyri J. Sounds good to me. Maybe also a comment in crontab, but, I think that's stretching things a bit. So then I think we want a warning about logadm in the logrotate config file and in the logrotate manpage. Perhaps a warning about logrotate in logadm's manpage and /etc/logadm.conf would also be appropriate. How often might we run this superfluous and pointless process, pray tell? My logs may need rotating every ten minutes, someone else's not so often. Again, there is no way for the packager to tell. The difference with the default logadm entries is they actually usefully do stuff right now; unless there are new log files created that logrotate can make itself useful with by default (and I feel that would be an exercise in futility), I object to the periodic running of a cron job that will do nothing. The main target user for the familiarity of logrotate is, well, familiar with it already so they won't be reading the manpage so the comment there will be missed. Which will in some cases lead to an annoyed customer and costly support calls when they call Sun trying to figure out what mysterious force is messing up with the log files that logrotate is handling. If I was doing this case I'd add something like this to the top of the config file (possibly spending some more time polishing the wording if I was doing the putback..) # Note: logadm(1M) is the default and recommended log rotation tool # in OpenSolaris. It'll cause more confusion than *familiarity*. Logadm has been around since Solaris 9 and many shops make heavy use of it to manage system and application logs. Primary reason being that Sun supports logadm, it's stable, and the management of the software package is not on the customers head. While many shops used logrotate prior to Solaris 9, going back to it will be more of a headache than blessing. Realistically, each UNIX and Linux variant has it's own tools for this or none. For example, BSD has newsyslog, while AIX/HP-UX have no tool. Not a lot of consistency to begin with. My take is that one of the following has to happen: 1. We stick with logadm, forget logrotate, and perhaps enhance logadm? 2. We drop logadm and switch to logrotate. 3. Standardize on logadm and make it handle logrotate.conf syntax in addition to the logadm.conf syntax. 4. Standardize on logrotate and make it handle logadm.conf syntax in addition to the logrotate.conf syntax. The point here is that when it comes to systems management, there has to be standardization. Otherwise, we end up with a system that can't be managed consistently across SA's, which is a bad thing. Having both tools will eventually lead to something crazy like.. logadm and logrotate colliding and rotating log files that contain important system or application data. The project team needs to consider why we need to invest resources into putting this project into core opensolaris. I haven't seen any rationale for /why/ we need this - and being on a list somewhere isn't sufficient reason stop using common sense... As Richard says, logrotate does not seem to be one of those "must have" things whose lack makes OpenSolaris unusable compared to Ubuntu. Yes, it /is/ a "nice to have" convenience, and users will be glad that it is easily available and just works on OpenSolaris. What do NOT want to see is default installations with redundant software. There has always been wayyyyyyy too much duplication in Solaris, leading to obscene installation sizes. Thus far the problem has gotten worse rather than better, but we'll see how it goes. With ARCs like logrotate coming out of the blue for the sake of attaining "Linux familiarity", there's a problem that needs to be addressed if this is truly something that Sun feels like it needs to persue. Where is the line being drawn? There are lots of things that one can conceivably integrate to make Solaris look like Linux, from benign utilities such as logrotate (duplicity with existing Solaris utilities be darned) to concepts that are more "out there" but still plausible under this banner such as emulating Linux's trash dump of /proc, or adding "/dev/hda.. /dev/hdb..." and so on. I guess what I'm saying is that randomly tossing out ARCs in an unstructured way is a messy path to take. The concept of "linux familiarity" if it were to continue should be a very tempered one, and would benefit at the minimum from some set boundaries and expectations. This smells like a OS.org Project to me.
