I am sponsoring this case for Todd Pisek. The timer is set to 6/18/2008.

This is offered under the Familiarity Doctrine.

-----------

1. Background

"The ircII program is a full screen, termcap based interface to
        Internet Relay Chat." (irc manpage)

ircII is externally maintained Free Open Source Software (FOSS).
Sun's role with this project is to port and monitor the open source
project. For additional information about the project or originating
community, see [1]. Upstream code changes are not currently needed or
anticipated because the project already compiles and runs under
Solaris and the version being integrated is stable.

ircII is licensed under a BSD-like license. See OSR #8120 [2] for
more information. This project will port version 20060725, the
version which was current at the time of the OSR.

This project requests a minor release binding.

2. Architecture

ircii is an Internet Relay Chat client supporting DCC (Direct Client
	to Client protocol).

After ircii connects to the remote irc server, it spawns ircio and
puts ircio between itself and the server. Ircio communicates with
ircii via unnamed pipes that get dup'd to stdin and stdout in the
fork/exec of ircio. Ircio's purpose is to allow irc to pause, but
	still respond to pings.

When ircii needs to exec a shell, at the user's request, it spawns
ircflush to capture exec'd shell's output and send input to the exec'd
	shell.

In an X11 environment the irc WINDOW sub-command can be used to spawn
the command 'wserv' in an xterm. This allows ircii to move a
	channel's I/O activity to a separate X11 window.

I placed the manpage and the FOSS checklist in the case materials directory.

I did not enumerate or include all of the scripts and help files being placed
in /usr/share/irc/script and /usr/share/irc/help, as there is quite a long
list of them. If these are required in the case directory then I'll fetch
them.

Todd and Dean,

Looking at the interface table the /usr/lib/irc/scripts directory being
Uncommitted makes fine sense. This directory could also be declared as
Project Private. However, why aren't the scripts themselves within this
directory Project Private rather then Volatile?

Thanks,

John

On this page:
http://sac.eng/BestPractices/interface_taxonomy.html

I saw the following under "Volatile" and felt that it applied:

"This classification is typically used for free or open source software
  (FOSS),..."

When I read the description of "Project Private" I felt it didn't quite fit as
well.

And, I'm still wrapping my brain around this stuff and I could just be
misunderstanding things.

I guess it makes more sense for the script and help directories and contents
to have the same classification...dunno why I did it that way.

So, maybe do them this way...?

    /usr/share/irc/script Uncommitted Scripts location
    /usr/share/irc/script/* Project Private Individual script
                                                      files (many).
/usr/share/irc/help Uncommitted Online Help files location
/usr/share/irc/help/* Project Private Individual help files,
                                                      per irc sub-command

Yeah, advice like that always gets us into trouble.  ;-}

I'd make them all Project Private.

The key question you need to ask yourself is, "should any other
project be trying to add files to these directories, or reading the
files there, or depending on them in any way?" If the answer is "no"
(and I think this is a good example of "no"), then they're Project
Private.

"Uncommitted" means that we're not committing to keeping the
directories themselves, but they should be documented in case users or
other applications want to futz with them. That doesn't make sense in
this case.

Is there an expectation that the user will write/add/modify the scripts?
If so, the scripts stuff needs to be some sort of public, you can't put
them in a read-only filesystem, and you need to ensure that you don't
stomp on user-modified stuff on upgrades.

Maybe:

/usr/share/irc/script Committed System provided scripts location
/usr/share/irc/script/* Volatile Individual script files(read only)
/etc/irc/script/ Committed	User provided scripts location (initially empty)

and modify the script search/open mechanism to search in /etc/irc BEFORE /usr/share/irc.

The help dir and files all smell private to me...

There is no such expectation. They could be in a read-only filesystem.
