I'm asking this because I've had bad experiences with spotlight on MacOS X keeping disks spinning sometimes. * Does this work if the users home directory is NFS mounted ? * Does it cross filesystem boundaries below the users home dir ? * If the users home dir (or subdirs below it) are ZFS datasets that have the ZFS snapdir visible will this index the snapshot dirs too ? I believe MetaTracker allows the user to configure what directories will be searched, so users can specify that sensitive information in certain file locations not be tracked. However, I don't think it uses any heuristics to avoid tracking sensitive information. It would be interesting to find out if MetaTracker does anything special to avoid tracking known files that contain sensitive information. It would probably be bad, for example, if it put your .Xauthority cookie or gnome-keyring data files into a database. By default, tracker will ignore all directory begin with ".", for example, ".gnome". by this, it avoids indexing some sensitive data. And ZFS snapdir begins with ".", so it will be ignored. Pidgin is one exception. That is very subjective and highly dependent on the size and type of the users home directory content. It is also likely dependent on wither the home dir was local or remove. I'd rather have seen some numbers. What about the question where the user is logged in multiple times from different systems all sharing the same home directory ? Will there be only one copy of trackerd ? or will there be multiple copes possibly corrupting the database as they all try to write to it ? Trusted Extensions have multiple gnome desktops each running in a different zone (eg multiple copies of nautilus) including some stuff for the user running in the global zone (eg metacity). Tracker daemon has thinking about this problem when design. so when tracker is started, it will check one lock file under Home directory. If it can lock it, tracker daemon will be started normally. If it find that file is locked by others, tracker daemon will start in read-only mode, which means that it can still handle user request for search, but can not write indexing data into database. By this, it can avoid corruption for database. 2. Tracker depends on SQLite API to read/write indexing data. I have tested that SQLite works cross architecture. I create some data using SQLite on Solaris X86, and share the database file, Then I login to another Solaris SPARC to mount that directory, and I found I can read the data using sqlite. It isn't that simple. Exactly where in the gnome startup is trackerd started up ? As I said above some of the gnome parts run in the global zone and some have a copy in each zone. So it is really important to know where this started up. Is it started up by gnome-session or by Xinitrc ? If it is by gnome-session will it start if gnome-session is passed --trusted-session ? I want to know for sure by it being tested before this ARC case closes. The GUI interface 'deskbar' applet only operates in the 'global zone'. This applet does not operate in labeled zones. The problem being that the gnome-panel applets run in the "Trusted Path" yet some of them should actually be running at the workspace label, this cases applet being of the former type. However I don't expect this case to fix that architectural problem. That however leaves us with the situation that this case only partially works when using a Trusted Extensions multi level desktop and that is bad. I think this case is useful and I don't want to hold it up. Yes it is. In order to deliver Trusted JDS for Solaris 10 some compromises needed to be made. We needed to weigh the advantage of having a particular applet available to the user against how complex it would be to make it a Trusted applet and behave appropropriately depending on the workspace label or enhance the panel sufficiently to enable it to context switch multiple running copies of an applet on workspace switches (much like nautilus does right now). Neither of these options are simple to implement, however, due to panel applet positioning and embedding. When community release tracker 0.6.6 tarball, it is enabled by default in gnome-session, that means when gnome-session start, trackerd will be started also. When I make the pkg on solaris and integrate it into our internal gnome build for test, I disable tracker autostart in gnome-session. that's why Robert kinsella found that he needs to start it manually. The reason why I disable it for our internal build is that: Because trackerd will index user' home directory by default, If one user's home directory is huge, indexing for the first time may be time-consuming. And out internal gnome build need to be deployed to one internal Sunray Server, which is main desktop for staff in my team also. I don't want to bother anyone who are not interested in tracker in our internal sunray server that's why I disable it temporally in the internal build. Sorry but that still isn't clear. What is this case proposing for the integration of tracker into a Solaris/OpenSolaris distro ? I don't care what happens for internal builds and internal testing. Launching if from e.g. the internal zone, the window label Internal. Any settings changed in the window labeled Internal will affect the settings for the internal zone for that user. Some settings are only applicable in the Global zone, these preference dialogs / applications are always launched in the global zone.
