4. Technical Description:
    4.1. Details:
Songbird is a complete desktop media player or "jukebox" with a
uniquely open approach to Internet digital media network services.
It runs on Mozilla's XULRunner platform and utilizes GStreamer media
        framework for media playback.

        Songbird provides the following features:

        * Ability to play multiple audio formats, such as MP3, AAC, Ogg
Vorbis, FLAC and Windows Media Audio.
        * Multi-Language Support. Songbird comes in 39 languages.
        * Integrated Web Search. Search the web from the context of your
collection or tell Songbird to search on the currently playing track.
        * A skinnable interface, via feathers.
        * Drag-and-drop songs from the Library or another playlist to create
          your own custom mixes.
        * Play, Pause, Previous, Next, Volume, Mute, Seek, Three Repeat Modes,
          and Shuffle.
        * Criteria-based playlists that are always up-to-date with your
          current collection.
        * Get mixes from the Internet and stay up-to-date with the latest
          updates, downloads, and casts.
        * Filter your collection by Genre, Artist, Album, and Song or
          Search-As-You-Type.
        * scan the user's computer for all audio files and add them to a
          local library.
        * Tell Songbird to watch a folder for new music and it will
automatically add new tracks to your collection.
        * A configurable and collapsible graphical user interface similar to
          iTunes, and miniplayer mode.
        * Play web pages as playlists and view any web page as a playlist.
        * Edit meta-data tags and save back to file.
        * Songbird JS API. Create, populate and play a playlist and much more
          from your Web site.
        * Built-in RSS subscription and MP3 file download.
        * Build deeply integrated web stores into Songbird with Mozilla XUL.

saved passwords are stored in an encrypted file in user's profile
folder. The saved passwords can be protected by using a Master
        Password.

Songbird does not allow a website to download onto, install onto, or

Community will provide security updates as soon as possible.

Hi Irene,
I'm very pleased to see that Songbird is now on the radar
for inclusion. I have some questions for you:

Which version of Songbird will the project team integrate
initially (and how often will it be updated?).

There are always comments on Songbird fora about obtaining
new media plugins. What will the project team do to make
this process easy to follow? Will there be, for instance,
an IPS package of plugins and config which a user can download
and install in a painless fashion?

I'm less than impressed that we have yet another case that
plans to deliver its own copy of nss/nspr.

That's at odds with the imported claim just above it.

What exact version of NSS does Sonbird require?

In snv_92 I see NSS 3.11.9 which is the latest the NSS team has
published, so how much more recent does Songbird need?

If newer than that just work with the NSS team to get it updated instead.

Currently the latest community release is 0.6.1, a micro update to the
0.6 release(Jun. 13th) with several bug fixes from 0.6:
http://www.songbirdnest.com/release-notes/0.6.1. From the Songbird
Roadmap(http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Roadmap), there will be a minor
updates every two months, until the official 1.0 release next year.

Songbird is integrated with GStreamer framework and all the GStreamer
plugins apply to Songbird, for example, the mp3 gstreamer plugin from
Fluendo. I think we, the desktop team and the IPS team, will work out a
solution to easy the user experience to get the plugins by IPS with
necessary agreements. And some plugins(with re-distribution issue) will
be put into an encumbered repository.

From the configure.in, the NSS version needs to be >= 3.12.0

Hi Jyri,

Songbird needs NSS version >= 3.12.0, which is in the Mozilla tree:
http://lxr.mozilla.org/seamonkey/source/security/nss/lib/nss/nss.h#73.

It'll be great that the NSS team could update to a newer version. Then
Songbird will build with the system one.

Is 3.12 formally released yet?

The latest I see NSS team has published is in
/share/builds/components/security/SECURITY_JES5U2_20080131
which is 3.11.9 which is the same as in Nevada currently.

If 3.12 is out already I imagine NSS team will publish it in the
reasonably close future so you could just depend on it.

What is Songbird? Thunderbird's little brother?

3.12.0 was released for use in FF3 (more generally, Mozilla products) only.
It did not pass, or even undergo, Sun's rigorous QA, and as such
is not qualified for distribution in Solaris as part of /usr/lib/mps
(where official Solaris NSS libs go).

NSS 3.12.0 is now available for testing purposes (only) within Sun, as a
"Technology Preview Release". See attached announcement.
Sun products that use NSS and expect to release in 2009 can test with it
now. They'll have to live with the present bugs.

Yes, that is the latest official Sun version of NSS.
NSS 3.11.10 will come out this quarter.

I expect to see a 3.12.x (x probably being 1 or 2) come out as the first
official Sun release of NSS 3.12.x this calendar year.

All,

The following is a version of Security 3.12 Technology Preview:

/share/builds/integration/security/SECURITY_3.12TP_20080620

IMPORTANT:
This version of Security 3.12 is made available to Sun products as a
Technology Preview. It has been thoroughly tested and deemed ready for
the Firefox 3.0 client. We are still working on revocation checking and
database merging.

A Security 3.12.x version will be available for Release to Sun's
customers before the end of 2008. The features still under development
should not interfere with your testing.
We want to be aware of any sun server product's needs to use this
earlier, and we will make every reasonable effort to support you.

INFORMATION:

The main new features in Security 3.12 are:
     * SQLite-Based Shareable Certificate and Key Databases
     * libpkix: an RFC 3280 Compliant Certificate Path Validation Library
     * Camellia cipher support
     * TLS session ticket extension (RFC 5077)

For more detailed information about this release, read the release notes at:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/pki/nss/nss-3.12/nss-3.12-release-notes.html

The list of platforms supported by this version is compliant with SWI
SRD 8.01.
      See http://jesarch.sfbay.sun.com/PrintFriendly.jsp?page=8.01SWISRD
      for details.

Hi Nelson,

Songbird is a desktop media player to mash-up with the web. It's built
on top of Mozilla platform, and developed by a band of experienced,
dedicated software developers and designers called the Pioneers of the
Inevitable, some of them are from Winamp and the Yahoo! Music Engine[1].
It has the similar GUI layout with ITunes and provides an alternative
for "Media Player + ipod + music store" solution.

Songbird makes use of the NSS 3.12.0 in Mozilla tree currently. When NSS
3.12.x is shipped with Solaris, Songbird will be linked with the system one.

Given the timeline for a Public 3.12 integration, would it be feasible for
Songbird to depend on the Mozilla 3.0 project, and use its copy of NSS (and
maybe others) directly in the meantime? That would allow for the projects
to use the version they need and to share in any bugfixes that might arise.

Hi Danek,

Thanks for the suggestion. This sounds reasonable to me. Songbird will
make use of Firefox's copy of NSS/NSPR and migrate to the system one
when it's available.
