Does this terminal emulator use an existing TERM value/terminfo entry or
is a new one required for it?

Terminator uses vte, which is the backend of gnome-terminal. Not only it
uses the same TERM value, but it uses the same options you have set in
gnome-terminal. Which is convenient since you configure gnome-terminal
to your taste and terminator will be the same.
