Technical Description BACKGROUND Sun Shared Visualization provides remote visualization. It is software that interposes on OpenGL/X applications (on Solaris or Linux) so that 3D rendering is accelerated by a graphics board attached to the server running the application, and then reads back images, compresses them, and transmits them to the client for display. VirtualGL and TurboVNC components were approved as part of the "3D Server Technologies" case LSARC/2006/547 and shipped as part of Sun's "Shared Visualization Software" product. This product was subsequently updated by LSARC fast tracks 2007/578 and 2007/579. The VirtualGL and TurboVNC packages are controlled by the open source project at virtualgl.sourceforge.net and Sun is a sponsor. These two components share a library that optimizes JPEG compression, libturbojpeg. THIS FAST TRACK This fast track covers changes to Sun Shared Visualization for its release 1.1.1. The main purpose of the Shared Vis 1.1.1 release is to support new platforms and improve performance (especially on Sun Ray). Of course, some bug fixes are also included. This message is the case directory's proposal file (and the proposal file will be updated as needed in response to questions or issues). This Fast Track will timeout at 5 PM Pacific on Friday, October 31. THIS RELEASE The following component versions are updated in this 1.1.1 release: VirtualGL 2.1.1 TurboVNC 0.5 VirtualGL Sun Ray "plug in" 1.1.1 SGE graphics additions 1.1.1 New supported platforms: Ubuntu 6 or later (Debian Linux based) OpenSolaris 2008.11 Solaris 10 update 6 Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 WS New functionality The VirtualGL Sun Ray plug-in now offers a faster YUV image mode (disabling DPCM compression). This improves frame rate significantly with Sun Ray 1 DTUs, with improved image quality as a bonus, at the expense of using about 50% more network bandwidth. The default image compression is unchanged, for this dot-dot release. VGL's pop-up GUI, extended to Sun Ray in the previous release, can dynamically control the image transport technique (as per the user's performance/quality preferences). And static (or initial) transport control is available from the command line. Former TurboVNC releases supported JPEG image compression or none (i.e., RGB image transport with no compression). This new version can also use the fastest elements of TightVNC's encoding with minimal Zlib compression for image tiles with few distinct colors and continues to use TurboJPEG for image tiles with more colors. New interfaces The "3D Server Technologies" case LSARC/2006/547 included extensions to Sun Grid Engine (SGE, formerly Sun N1 Grid Engine, N1GE) that allow SGE to select a graphics board, as well as a host for a user's job. This shipped as part of Sun's "Shared Visualization Software" product. These components are controlled by Sun. This release adds a consumable (integer) dedicated_graphics resource, which represents the number of graphics accelerators. The former graphics resource just allowed an application a right to use (i.e., share) a graphics accelerator. The TurboVNC Unix server now executes ~/.vnc/xstartup.turbovnc instead of ~/.vnc/xstartup. This is to avoid conflicts with other VNC flavors. That sounds like the change introduced by PSARC/2004/368: Secure by Default, which changed the default behavior of the X server to not listen for incoming TCP connections and only accept connections to the local transports (Unix domain sockets and named pipes).
