[Just noticed the mail file in the case directory was empty even though this
went out to the mailing lists, so I'm sending again to psarc-record in hopes
it gets saved this time. -alan-]

Subject: PSARC FastTrack [02/17/2006]: EOF of Standard Type Services Framework
(STSF)

I am sponsoring this fasttrack for myself & Jay Hobson of the X group.
It times out next Friday, Feb. 17, 2006. (I'm submitting to PSARC
since the case introducing STSF was reviewed by PSARC, but cc'ing LSARC
since LSARC reviewed a case that depended on STSF and the primary
intended users of STSF were to be desktop software LSARC normally reviews.)

1. Introduction
     1.1. Project/Component Working Name:
EOF of Standard Type Services Framework (STSF)
     1.2. Name of Document Author/Supplier:

4. Technical Description

End of Feature of Standard Type Services Framework (STSF)
---------------------------------------------------------

PSARC 2002/061 introduced the Standard Type Services Framework (STSF) as a
new API for applications to use in rendering text for output to bitmapped
or raster graphics devices. STSF was released as open source, and delivered
in Solaris 9 Update 6 and Solaris 10, but was not adopted by any software
outside of the STSF project, and funding for the project ended in 2004.
The Xft2 API from the open source community has been widely adopted instead,
including by a number of projects shipping in Solaris, and will be the API
all further text rendering work will be concentrated on.

This case announces the obsolesence of the STSF system in a patch release of
Solaris, and removes it from a minor release of Solaris that ships no sooner
than one year after the EOF announcement. (Current schedules for these are
to announce in S10U2 and remove in the release currently known as "Nevada.")

This case obsoletes/removes these interfaces introduced by the original STSF
case and follow-ons:

			  Prior
  Interface Classification Comments
  ______________________ _________________ ____________________________
ST Client Library API Evolving PSARC 2002/061
Xst Client API Evolving PSARC 2002/061
XST Extension Protocol Evolving PSARC 2002/061
  xstls Evolving PSARC 2002/061
stfontserverd protocol Project Private PSARC 2002/061
  /var/run/stsf_door Project Private PSARC 2002/061
XST extension in Xsun <unspecified> PSARC 2002/061
XST extension in Xorg Evolving PSARC 2004/187
  svc:/application/font/stfsloader
			  Evolving PSARC 2004/752

Other than above software being removed, all other consumers of the
STSF & XST APIs in Solaris were modified to not use those APIs before
Solaris 10 shipped. These prior consumers no longer use STSF in
Solaris 10 and later releases:

  xclock PSARC 2002/061
  Xft2 library LSARC 2003/274

Several GNOME cases incorrectly listed a dependency on STSF in their
interface tables - at no time did GNOME on Solaris call or link with
any STSF or XST API's, but instead it has always called libXft2, which
previously provided a wrapper around the XST API without requiring any
change to the calling application.

When STSF is removed, contracts between STSF and these cases will be
considered cancelled for all releases starting with the one STSF is
removed from:

STSF dependency on fontconfig LSARC 2003/273
STSF dependency on freetype LSARC 2002/291

The complete list of files & packages removed from Solaris will be:

	  /usr/include/sttypes.h
	  /usr/include/stprivate.h
