Subject: PSARC FastTrack [11/22/2006]: Xsun Obsolescence / EOF Announcement

I am sponsoring this fasttrack on behalf of the entire X server team.
It will time out on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at which point we will all be
giving much thanks.

4. Technical Description

This case seeks approval to announce the EOF of the Xsun X server.

The current draft of the release notes entry is:

The Xsun server for the X Window System may not be included in a
future release of Solaris. Users are recommended to migrate to
the Xorg server when possible. Features found in Xsun but not
in Xorg, such as Display Postscript and X Image Extension (XIE),
may also not be included in a future release of Solaris.

Currently Xorg support is provided for x86 local graphics devices.
The SPARC graphics team is currently in development of Xorg drivers
for the XVR-300 and XVR-2500 graphics cards. The Sun Ray team is
also in development of a Sun Ray product which does not depend on Xsun.

This case does not include removal of Xsun at this time - just starting
the one year to FCS countdown timer. A future case will seek that
removal once the above mentioned dependencies are closer to delivery.

Really for the future case, but what SPARC systems are planned
to be supported? fbconfig on my existing systems say ffb and
m640. How does this relate to xvr*?

A table mapping graphics devices from driver names to marketing names is
available internally at:
	http://xserver.sfbay.sun.com/twiki/bin/view/X/SunFrameBuffers

I don't know about external customer documentation beyond the Sun System
Handbook on SunSolve for customers with valid support contracts.

For your specific case, ffb is Creator-3D, m64 is PGX-8/24/64. Both are
almost a decade older than the XVR-300 & XVR-2500. (Those XVR models
first went on sale during 2006. ffb was the first UltraSPARC 3D graphics
card, sold with the original Ultra 1 & 2 machines, with later models for
later machines. m64 was the on board graphics in Ultra 5 & 10, and
Sun Blade 100 & 150, as well as add in PCI boards.)

Support for graphics devices for pre PCI-Express systems is still TBD.
(XVR-300 & XVR-2500 are the PCI-E boards for Ultra 25 & 45.)

Even prior to the Xsun EOF, SPARC graphics had a long list of graphics boards
proposed for EOF due to end of hardware support life, including both of yours.
