Discussion From www.libvirt.org... The library's aim is to provide a "long term stable C API initially for the Xen paravirtualization but should be able to integrate other virtualization mechanisms if needed." virt-manager, which is a gnome based GUI for managing guest domains (http://virt-manager.et.redhat.com/), is the primary motivation for integrating libvirt. virt-manager will be integrated into and delivered by the JDS consolidation. libvirt has detailed knowledge on the hypervisors's implementation. It's tightly coupled with the hypervisor which is the reason why it is included in ON as part of the xen-gate. libvirt also includes virsh, an interactive shell based application. virsh is built on top of libvirt and allows a user to interact with the hypervisor and guest domains. 3. Interface table All interfaces in libvirt, including associated python files are Uncommitted. Documentation on the interfaces can be found in the case directory in libvirt.interfaces. virsh's commands, options, and output are Uncommitted. The man page for virsh can also be located in the case directory. 4. Deliverables & Licensing libvirt.so along with the python wrappers are LGPL. The virsh application includes a statically linked GNU readline library, and is GPL due to that. If a dynamic version of GNU readline is available in Solaris before integration, virsh will link to that instead. We're working with the Sysnet/N1 group to make sure that Sun's system management roadmap includes coherently managing all of Sun's virtualization technologies (Containers, Xen and LDom's), but that is a medium-to-long term solution. Including libvirt will not only fill in the short-term gap but also leverage future work that the open source commutity will build on top of libvirt for system management.
