I don't see how. It took me awhile to figure out how to get around this, and having two separate binaries seemed to be the only way I could think of to do it. I think it should be possible to have this kind of thing on unix, too, but no one's done the work. Some people inside Sun seem to see problems from the fact that star did eveolve during the past 3 years. The state of the source however is suffucient for an immediate integration. If an approved PSARC does not mean that it is going to be integrated immediately after the software matches the description, then these cases are not a useful vehicle and should be avoided as they just take time but do not lead to a result - sorry. With ksh93, the problem is that the PSARC case did say something different than that what was planned later after the integration started. Another problem with ksh93 is that it tries to replace parts of libc with internal implemenations while the star case only adds software that has been compiled/linked against libc. And please remember that the ksh93 PSARC is a new one. It makes sense to first finish with older cases.... I thought that the fact that this kind of burocracy exists on Solaris is a real advantage compared to Linux as it looked to me that an approved PSARC is a grant for integration. If such an integration does not really happen, then there is no such advantage and things look frustrating to me. The star case is an easy case compared to the ksh93 case (which has a lot of implied dependencies to many plases all over ON). Star has only one interface to the rest of ON and this is ufsdump/ufsrestore. We need to finish at least one easy case of a bigger project integration in order to understand how we could make the collaboration between Sun and the non-Sun parts of the community work. An approved PSARC case means one thing only: that the architectural part of the project is considered approved; it does not mean: - that there is funding available - that funding needs to be made available - that the work is actually scheduled to be done There are quite a few PSARC cases which, in the end, resulted in no code being integrated in Solaris for various reasons. But gvim is kind of important nonetheless. Why wouldn't gvim/gview be delivered at the same time as vim? Is that a result of the way VIM is configured and built? Even if GUI support is all or nothing, VIM could be built twice, once with and once without GUI support and the right executables taken from each build. A bit wasteful, perhaps, but how else will gvim be added in the future? (Or is the plan to contribute improvements to the VIM build system first?) Being as this is my first project, I want to keep it as simple and straightforward as possible. There is most likely a non-negligible learning process ahead of me as I familiarize myself with the process. In addition, I rarely if ever use X, and aren't really setup to test. (I probably haven't used an X-Windows app in over 6 years). Although this may be trivial for a user of the vim GUI, I am not prepared to take this on at this time. Until I am, I personally can not except maintenance responsibility for gvim. If vi is replaced by vim, then many people will be extremely angry with Sun because of the vim bugs and deviations from vi behavior. Also, approval for this project doesn't equal or imply approval for replacing vi. On this thought, where will vim deliver? /usr/bin/vim? /usr/gnu? Also, vim has a "weird" license. I'm actually not sure that it is good to introduce yet another license into the code base. (It has some weird restrictions on copying and modification, which are kind of GPLish, but I think Sun Legal needs to go over it.) Certainly, I'd _prefer_ to have a BSD-licensed or CDDL'd /usr/bin/vi, seeing as vi is more or less the default editor on Solaris. As a vi user for 15 years, I assure you that I won't be angry. But that's a different case anyways, and there will be time for the would-be angry and their advocates to voice their objections. Still, I expect the ARC mostly to agree that if there's enough non-trivial differences between vi and vim in vi-compatible mode then vim won't replace vi until those are addressed. For my USD 0.02, the license doesn't matter so long as it's something that doesn't cause havoc. I actually found out that there is a another way to reguest feature enhancements, other than sending in patches. In the following link Bram explains how an individual or group can sponsor vim development, and gain direct infuence to the vim roadmap. http://www.vim.org/htmldoc/sponsor.html#sponsor-faq It may, in the future make a great deal of sense to sponsor vim, if we need Solaris specific fixes and improvements.(IE: the vi compatibility issues) We might even get Bram to eventually maintain the Solaris package for us, if that is our desire. I am willing to publish the next version under the CDDL. In any case, all I was trying to note was that when the GUI is installed, it appears in /usr/bin , not /usr/X11R6/bin . The submitter (et.al.) should understand that outlining future plans is good, but only in that it provides the ARC better context. It doesn't not indicate any form of acceptance or future approval.
