Project Description: /usr/openwin/bin/ctlconvert_txt is a utility which takes in text in native single byte CTL locales (ar, he and th_TH) and convert it into CTL'ised output. The output of ctlconvert_txt is the actual presentation forms. This is no longer used as conversion from logical to visual representation is done at runtime now and we are not interested in storing presentation forms output by ctlconvert_txt which is not portable. The original purpose this filter was to provide glyph input into non-PS printers. mp(1) do have -D/-P option for creating non-PS output so this is not useful at all now. /usr/openwin/bin/ctlmp is a print filter used for converting single byte Arabic and Hebrew flat text file into a simple PostScript file for possible display or printing. As a part of print filter consolidation project, we developed multiscript capable /usr/bin/mp which is able to handle all scripts with proper configuration files. So far mp was lacking the configuration file it needed for printing in native Arabic and Hebrew locales, which justified ctlmp's existence. Now we are providing configuration files for these single byte locales also, as a result ctlmp is proposed to be removed. 2.2. Risks and Assumptions: ctlmp and ctlconvert_txt are very rarely used. These are antiques from the native Arabic/Hebrew/Thai era and badly needs EOF soon. ctlmp and mp are created from the same source base, so they share most of the options. See the technical description for the few differences between mp and ctlmp. At this point the project team does not have any intention to support options in ctlmp(1) which mp(1) lacks unless ARC mandates us to do so. 3. Business Summary 3.1. Problem Area: Problem is maintenance of redundant print filter functionality in 3 binaries. ctlmp do only support 3 legacy locales. Out of Arabic/Hebrew and Thai native locales, mp already supports Thai. We are fixing mp(1) to support legacy locales which was the only reason ctlmp(1) was useful. It does not make sense to keep these unused utilties around forever. 3.2. Market/Requester: I18N c-team 3.3. Technical Description: 4.1. Details: ctlconvert_txt takes in the native CTL text and converts it to presentation forms output by m_transform_layout function. The output is not portable. Currently all the applications convert to CTL on the fly starting with logical characters. So we don't need to store the presentation form and so this utility is no longer useful. Originally the intention of this was to create a standard glyphs file from a text file for printing with non PostScript devices. This mandates we have the same fonts available in the printer as which is used in the system. mp utility now supports direct ctl output to PCL printers using -D/-P options. The following options are available in ctlmp, but not there in mp(1) ctlmp command line option: -W - Disable the line wrap. (mp does not have any option to disable line wrap) ctlmp configuration file option: TEXT_VISUAL or TEXT_IMPLICIT - Used to distinguish between the type of text to print, mp assumes text in TEXT_IMPLICIT. Means character code elements are stored in logically ordered segments. As opposed to storing them in visual ordering. Practically all we store text in IMPLICIT form always. Apart from these two options, mp is a superset of the features in ctlmp. The following will be removed.
