One nagging thought about moving the compilers to /usr/bin is that it seems to give a level of precedence to the GNU compilers and tools that is higher than we offer for our *own* tools (Studio). I.e. if gdb and gcc are in /usr/bin, then why not dbx and cc? One could argue that as long as Sun Studio isn't redistributable and isn't open source (like was promised 2 years ago by Schwartz) it is a second class citizen in the OpenSolaris community. Why did we get /usr/ucb/cc but never /usr/bin/cc. "Not this ARC case", clearly. Just 2 days ago Tim asserted that there will always be a difference between the Sun distribution and the OpenSolaris distribution. I believe these will mostly be additions. Besides, one great question to me is where OpenSolaris will get java? Sure, an distro can get either the Sun Java or (soon) the OpenJDK one, but it isn't owned by the OpenSolaris community. This is just a distro decision separable from a community. This seems to still be an open issue. It seems like there is a bigger picture/architectural change here to which gdb fits in (now) and gcc in the future. It would be nice if that could be presented to the ARC. It's incapable of reading our core dumps correctly (it either will fail to recognise the core, or when it does recognise one it'll tend to crash trying to parse it). Iirc, there are fairly old bugs open on this. It doesn't appear that either Sun or GNU have had any interest in fixing GDB on Solaris (did it break with S10 changes?). What's the point in moving a broken debugger from one place to another? If any energy is to be expended on GDB other than on fixing it, it should be on *removing* it. The current plan is not to upgrade software, although gdb could be upgraded in a separate case. This wouldn't fix things... The current gdb in Solaris is version 6.3, but I also tried reading a gcore-generated core with the latest gdb (version 6.7.1), and the above reported problem still occurs. However, gdb is not completely broken--as far as I can tell, gdb can debug gcc- and Sun Studio 11-compiled binaries, including core files generated (not via gcore) when executing those files. So it's completely useless for post-mortem debugging (the primary use-case for debuggers) on Solaris. The core files I tried were not generated by gdb; they were generated by executing a faulty program which core dumped, so gdb did read a Solaris- generated core file. Since users who are coming from other operating systems seem to be most familiar with gdb, I would suggest the former. However, in the long-run, shipping broken, approaching-useless software ought to raise architectural flags. If it's quite broke and we aren't going to fix it, it shouldn't be in Solaris.
