4. Technical Description

Exported Interface Stability
---------------------------------------- ---------
"product-sn" Sun Private

Service requires both a chassis serial number and a product identifier
be included in the FMA event telemetry to enable:

   1. Service entitlement checking against a serial number stored in the
      contracts database
   2. Locating the specific chassis the FRU is located in
   3. FRU traceability

In the past you could typically depend on the chassis serial number
serving as the serial number recorded in the contracts database.

With the introduction of blade based products this is no longer the case
and hence the need to provide additional information to address items 1
through 3.

This case proposes a change to the FMA Event Protocol by adding a new
name-value pair to the authority portion of the hc FMRI scheme to
accommodate the serial number used to check a product's level of service
entitlement. Proposed name: "product_sn"

Example:

FRU: hc://:chassis_id=5678912:product_id:SunFire
T2000:product_sn=1234567:part=501684301/motherboard=0

The source for the product_sn value will be specified in the product's
FM Portfolio by the product team.

The "chassis-id" nv-pair in the hc FMRI for the FRU member of a fault
event will continue to be used to report the chassis serial number
information required to locate the specific chassis containing the
identified FRU. The source for chassis-id value should be specified in
the product's FM Portfolio.
