I'm sponsoring this fast-track for Minskey Guo, the timer to expire on
01/21/2008.

This project delivers a Solaris x86/amd64 port of the open-sourced
ATI Radeon 3D driver, using the DRI interfaces provided by PSARC 2004/801.

The proposed binding is patch.

The one-pager is included below.

4. Technical Description:

Currently, most graphics cards provide hardware units to accelerate
3-dimensional rendering operations, and offload complex 3D operations
from CPU to graphics cards.

Mesa3D is an open-sourced OpenGL implementation, which can achieve
much better display effects if OSes could make full use of hardware
acceleration functions. JDS team is porting Compiz (a compositing
window manager) to solaris, which uses 3D graphics acceleration via
OpenGL.

Open-sourced DRI (Direct Rendering Infrastructure) project is providing
3D hardware acceleration for Mesa3D. It has been ported to Solaris by
PSARC 2004/801. But PSARC 2004/801 only introduced one 3D driver for
Intel graphics cards.

This project is to port open-sourced ATI Radeon 3D driver and eanble
3D hardware accleration for ATI Radeon series graphics cards. It won't
change any existing interfaces.

Variants of the ATI Radeon (Radeon 7000, I believe) are used in SPARC
systems. Is there any plan to offer this functionality on SPARC hardware?

I don't think there are current plans to offer this in SPARC. If we
were to do so, we'd first
have to extend the DRI/DRM interfaces to SPARC, which in turn would have
a dependency
upon the _sigoff/_sigon interfaces extended as Contract Private the x86
desktop consolidation.

It would make sense, in my opinion, to provide open interfaces to
sigoff/sigon and enable
broader use of the DRI/DRM. With the signal issue resolved, we could
provide a SPARC
implementation of the DRI/DRM but these are beyond the scope of this
project.

Maybe we can offer this functionality later once Xorg is ported to SPARC.
That will be another project since this case focuses on radeon 3D driver
only
instead of DRI (direct rendering infrastructure) framework.

Xorg has been shipping on SPARC for about a year now in Nevada and S10U4.

I remember that you mentioned only graphics cards which are sold by =
=20
Sun are supported.
If we plan to port ATI radeon driver to SPARC, we have to implement =
=20
power-management
as well (I assume that power management is a must for SPARC), that =
=20
would be difficult
without support from AMD/ATI since we have no any documents.

Sorry, I remove Diana Shi from this thread since she is on vacation =

and Lingbo is my manager now.

Radeon on SPARC uses the pfb driver, IIRC, which works well enough. Why
couldn't the information that is there, be used to support this on SPARC.

Recall also, that for the Radeon variants found on SPARC, the ATI BIOS
parser I wrote for Tadpole (and which is in NetBSD, and which Jay Cotton
has also used) works well enough to fully POST the card up even without
Fcode or BIOS support. (I've used this on MIPS hardware that had *no*
firmware support for the card.)

So, while there may be technical problems, it isn't clear to me that
"not enough information" is one of those problems.

Each chip in the Radeon family will have slightly different
power-management requirements. The fact that we support PM on the chip
used in pfb doesn't mean that we can support PM on other chips. Indeed,
SPARC graphics doesn't currently support PM on the XVR-300. Although
the chip architecture is quite a bit like that of the chip in the
XVR-100, it's sufficiently different that PM is not a no-brainer.

I agree that PM can, and should, be supported but it still requires some
degree of chip-specific code, and that in turn would require the proper
documents from the vendor.

I'm a little confused here.

I think what you're saying is that we can't safely do device-power
management on some parts -- but that we don't have that today either.
So, if we don't have it today on the current drivers, why is this is a
stopper for enabling 3D support for those? It will still be without
power management, but it doesn't sound like a feature regression.

And on some parts (XVR-100) we should be able to support power
management as well.

I believe the driver produced by this project is intended to support the
family of Radeon chips. What I'm saying is that within that family each
chip may have different PM requirements. On SPARC, we do support
board-level PM on the XVR-100, but not yet on the XVR-300

I agree with the reasoning that if we don't have PM support on some
devices on SPARC it's harder to justify it as a requirement for all
devices, but in all cases we do have to achieve the EnergyStar
requirements. XVR-300 does meet the those requirements in the platforms
that support it without needing to do board-level power-management.

pfb is closed-sourced driver and includes code from 3rd parties,
while the driver we will provide comes from opensource community.
Maybe we shouldn't copy any code from pfb to radeon driver without
an agreement from AMD/ATI.

pfb already supports radeon cards on SPARC, and opensourced radeon
supports radeon cards on x86. what's the benefit if we port radeon
driver to SPARC, compared to the cost of porting ?

so, I still limit my project scope to x86/amd64 only.

There having been no unresolved issues, this case was approved
in today's PSARC meeting.
