That should be libX11.so.4 - in order to preserve binary compatibility
and not break every single Solaris X11 application, we will be keeping
the existing version number. Solaris only changes library version
numbers when incompatible changes are made, and there are none of those
in this case.

Hi, Alan,

Will we deliver libX11.so.6* in /usr/X11/lib, and make
/usr/openwin/lib/libX11.so.4 a symbol link to it?

I sure he means "no, we deliver libX11.so.4 as we have before".

No, we will deliver libX11.so.4 in /usr/X11/lib, and make
/usr/openwin/lib/libX11.so.4 a symbolic link to it.

Changing the SONAME that gets recorded in binaries that link
against libX11 is not a useful thing to do, and not worth the
problems it causes.

(The use of libX11.so.6.2.0 is a known bug in the current
Indiana alpha releases, and will be fixed.)

It's unclear to me from the description if these functions are
completely compatible with the Xsun ones, or if these are
new functions and not related to any existant X11 application.

Hi Gary,
Yes, those are new functions available only in Xorg and that's one of
the reasons why we have to port the Xorg X18N to Solaris since some
projects like SSGD needs those APIs urgently.

Thanks,
Brian

"Xorg" and "Xsun" are bad ways to describe these. These are functions
that XFree86 added to libX11, and X.Org adopted in X11R6.7.

The current Solaris libX11 is based on X11R6.4, and this project is part
of updating that libX11 to the X11R7.x version. These functions work
with any X server, Xsun, Xorg, or other vendors X.

Yes - /usr/X11/lib/libX11.so.4 will use the exact same mapfile
versions as /usr/openwin/lib/libX11.so.4, plus the addition
of a new SUNW_1.2 version tag for the newly added Xutf8*
functions. It is the same library, just with new functions
added.

Hi, guys,

Since we reached the timeout date, and no objections, I'd like to close
this case as 'approved automatically'. Thank you all for your
suggestions and comments.

Regards,

P.S., I had updated the case file with Wei Xue's revision in previous email.
