PSARC,

I am sponsoring this fast track for Dermot McCluskey of the JDS
team in Dublin, Ireland. The case directory contains this proposal.
I have set the timer for Wednesday, February 20th, 2008.

This project introduces the Python Imaging Library (PIL) which provides
image processing capabilities for Python environments. The project
is requesting a Minor release of Solaris. The interfaces being
introduced are being declared Uncommitted. These all depend upon
Python which was declared External. I am working on the contract
for the interface in parallel with this fast track.

Thanks,

John

4. Technical Description:
    4.1. Details:
Python Imaging Library (PIL) provides image processing
capabilities for Python environments. It allows numerous
imaging-related operations to be performed from within Python
scripts (for example, you could load an image from a file,
crop it, flip it, convert to grayscale and save the
resulting image in a different format).

PIL provides support for numerous graphical file formats
with varying degrees of support: Identify Only, Read
Only or Read-Write. The full list of supported formats is:
ARG BMP BUFR CUR DCX EPS FITS FLI FPX GBR GIF GRIB HDF5 ICNS
ICO IM IMT IPTC JPEG MCIDAS MIC MPEG MSP PCD PCX PIXAR PNG
PPM PSD SGI SPIDER SUN TGA TIFF WMF XBM XPM XVTHUMB

Support is also provided for Tkinter (Python interface to Tk)
	image formats.

PIL is delivered as a set of Python modules installed in
	/usr/lib/python2.4/vendor-packages/PIL. There are also
demo scripts to be installed in /usr/demo and
	HTML-format documentation.

This proposal integrates version 1.1.6 of PIL.

Given that Python will be the foundation upon which Solaris packaging (IPS)
and source code management (mercurial) are likely to be based in the future,
wouldn't it be better to work on a fasttrack to raise its stability instead
of yet another contract?

Alan,

That sounds reasonable. I'll talk with the maintainer.
We'll either have a follow up case to raise the stability
or a contract will be signed.

Thanks,

John

These are all prefixed with "PIL.", right? That is, "PIL.Image", etc, are
the full module names?

PIL is a package (with an empty module body) and Image,
ImageChops, etc are modules within that package.

The project docs refer to the modules only as Image,
etc (not PIL.Image). A PIL.pth file is installed so
users can simply use "import Image", etc, but, of
course, "from PIL import Image" and "import PIL.Image"
also work.

If PIL.Image is the preferred form, or is considered
clearer, I'm happy to change the interface table to
show this?

What it should show is the names necessary to import the modules if the
developer hasn't modified $PYTHONPATH or sys.path. I guess with the .pth
file, then it's correct as it is, though I question the wisdom of
delivering the .pth file in the first place. There's the required one to
add vendor-packages in the first place, and pygtk seems to have delivered
one, but why not one for all the other things in vendor-packages? Is there
any rhyme or reason to which modules get their own .pth files, and which
don't?

None that I know of, but in this case it will be expected.
Also, I see that 2 other proposed, or soon-to-be proposed,
packages deliver .pth files, pygst and zope-interface, so
perhaps it's becoming more common?
