4. Technical Description

This project is to deliver a SPARC Xorg ddx module for the the XVR-2500
graphics accelerator. The driver name for the XVR-2500 is kfb.

The initial release will provide the basic functionality as is provided
by the kfb Xsun ddx module. The same set of visuals will be supported,
though 8-bit and 24-bit visuals will not be supported simultaneously.
Rather, when Xorg is running with a 24-bit depth, only 24-bit visuals
can be provided. Similarly, when Xorg is running with an 8-bit depth,
only 8-bit visuals will be available.

I'm not very familiar with the XVR-2500. What architectures are supported?

The CLI or the driver module API/ABI? (Both are External/Volatile, but
the driver module API/ABI is incompatibly changed far more often than
the CLI has been. They are versioned to prevent loading incompatible
versions though.)

If I felt like paperwork, I'd say a contract is needed, but it would just
formally write down our existing behaviour of notifying the X/DDX teams
mailing list (internally) when a new Xorg release with a different ABI
version is planned to integrate, and making sure that the drivers delivered
from outside the X consolidation are ready for that (before your driver,
that's just the nVidia driver, and they already follow the community and
prepare for ABI/API changes in their Linux, BSD & Solaris drivers).

The XVR-2500 is supported on SPARC PCI-E platforms such as Ultra 45.
