The S10C project is scheduled for an inception review on May 27th (two
weeks from now), and we're not planning to have a meeting today.

Are there any interns interested in volunteering for this case?

Do any members want to own it?

If not, then we'll address this on the 20th.

Sending this to the case for the mail log. A copy of the
contract is filed in the case directory.

---

You are receiving this email because you have been identified as a director
or manager whose engineers might be impacted in the future by the S10C
project.

The S10C project will be delivering a branded zone into ON. This zone will
run Solaris 10 hosted on a Solaris Next system. More information about this
project is available at:

http://solarispmt.sfbay.sun.com/attach/Attach09%2FS10C_PAC.v5.pdf
http://solarispmt.sfbay.sun.com/attach/Attach09%2FS10C_plc_phase1.042109.pdf

The ARC case for this project is at:

http://sac.eng/PSARC/2009/253/

Once this project integrates, any future code change which crosses the
user/kernel boundary in either the Nevada or Solaris 10 update gates could
have an impact on the correct operation of this brand.

We are asking that you ensure that the engineers on your teams familiarize
themselves with this project and what it might mean to them. We will be
holding a KTD (kernel technical discussion), as well as TOIs, in the next
few weeks. If engineers are unable to attend one of the sessions, an on-line
guide is also available at:

http://perf.eng.sun.com/twiki/bin/view/Zones/DevGuide

Please ask your engineers to review the guide and help improve it with their
feedback. The guide will also be available externally on opensolaris.org,
once the project has integrated, so that external contributors also have this
information.

Because of the potential impact this brand can have across the ON development
organization, PSARC has asked the project team to obtain a signed contract
from the groups which will need to take the brand into account during their
future development activities.

A high-level ARC contract is attached to this email. The purpose of this
contract is to help ensure that your group is aware of the S10C project.
You are requested to accept this contract by replying to this email. Your
response will also confirm that you have communicated about this project to
the relevant managers and engineers within your group. In order for the ARC
review to complete on schedule, please respond by September 18th.

If you have specific questions about this project, the contract or the
developer guide, please do not respond to this email since it will go to the
PSARC case. Instead, please send your questions to: s10c-core@sun.com.

Thanks,
Jerry

Jerry,
Tim Marsland initiated a discussion during PSARC closed business (which
you could listen to, if desired) today about your case and the
appropriateness
of a contract. ARC members acknowledged (and also explained why that
vehicle was
chosen) that request of your project team. Tim pointed out, and all
agreed that
the contract isn't an appropriate vehicle for cautioning other teams to
be wary of
changes that can affect S10C. So, we don't need a contract or its
approvals. Sorry
you were sent down that path.
PSARC would like to see a few things with regard to this project, however.
A best practice of sorts which can help 1) identify what sorts of
changes would
likely affect S10C adversely, 2) guidance as to how to avoid or
properly address
these sorts of changes, and 3) a recommended scope of the "transition"
duration.
Some of this was previously discussed and/or documented by your team.
Our discussion
today focused on not enumerating all possible interfaces at risk between
S10C and
Solaris.next, but more "categories" of types of changes a team could
recognize in their
own proposals which would raise a "I'm about to break S10C" flag. The
discussion lead
toward detecting disconnects being proposed between the library and
kernel boundaries.
Lastly, we discussed attempting to limit the time of proposed
exposure. So in the
case of S10C, how long do we intend to support such compatability
bridges? Tim was
suggesting that an N+1 model (carry forward to the next release).
We (PSARC) will be flexible with material and meetings, particularly
since we asked
for additional things a week prior to your scheduled review.
Tim and Garrett, I'm cc:ing you to have you chime in on things I missed.

All,
As discussed last meeting, Jerry has prepared a short note "qa.txt"
addressing the questions as to how to detect and correct issues that
may adversely affect the S10C environment. I have placed this file in the
commitment.materials directory for the case. Please review.
