4. Technical Description

This project proposes to turn CPU power management ON by default for
x86 systems in Solaris 10, starting on update 8. As a by product of
back porting the Power Aware Dispatcher project to update 8, we
believe it is important to modify the existing behavior to allow the
system to take advantage of the newly available features. By turning
CPU power management ON, we are introducing a higher degree of power
efficiency while maintaining overall system performance. This goes in
line with the company's commitment to energy efficiency and with the
desire to empower our users and customers with the same capabilities.

This change will be introduced when users upgrade their Solaris 10
systems to update 8, as well as fresh installs of S10U8 or when
applying the patch containing the fix for:

CR 6567156 bring CPU power awareness to the dispatcher.

If customer decide for whatever reason that they do not wish to
have power management enabled, they will need to change the editable
file /etc/power.conf to restore the previous behavior. Since testing
has shown this change in concert with the fix for 6567156 has no adverse
affect on performance, we anticipate that the majority of customers
will not notice this change, perhaps aside from lowered power bills.

SPARC systems will not have their power management behavior modified,
and will continue to have it OFF by default due to performance issues
on those platforms; when this has been addressed we will explore making
this change for sparc as well.

This closed approved automatic case is being filed to log the fact that
the default behavior is being changed in a patch.
