Details: With the putback of Fast Reboot by Default (PSARC 2008/760, 2009/091 and 2009/092), a Fast Reboot capable system will bypass firmware when "reboot" or "init 6" is invoked. For those users who wish to reboot through firmware, they can invoke "reboot -p" directly, or set config/fastreboot_default to false, then reboot. However, there are cases where a user would like to reboot through firmware only for the next reboot. One of such case is to fully reset the hardware based on vendor recommendation for newly flashed firmware to take effect on the Hermon cards. While "reboot -p" should suffice, it's preferable if user doesn't have to type the additional "-p" option directly. Another usage model is the "Restart" button from the "Shutdown" menu in GNOME desktop, which currently invokes "init 6". A new "Restart through PROM" button could be added to perform the equivalent of "reboot -p", but with all the clean shutdown currently performed by "init 6". Since SCF doesn't admit the possibility of temporary properties, and since having the system clear out a persistent property would probably be too hackish, did you consider creating a "config_ovr" temporary group with the new flag as "config_ovr/fastreboot_default"? The design for the "general" property group seems to use this scheme: temporary settings go in "general_ovr" (a non-persistent property group) and permanent ones in "general." Things that have to deal with those "general" properties look in both places. One other very tiny nit: "_np" as a suffix has historically meant "non-POSIX." If there's a convenience function, then it'll still need a name and (as a tiny nit only) I think avoiding "_np" might be a good idea. Regardless of whether or not there's a convenience function to set this flag, I'm not sure that using an entire property group as though it were a boolean is the right thing to do in SCF.
