OVERVIEW

Solaris contains @euro locale variants for 24 locales and they were
created for the transition period before the corresponding EU countries
changed their official currency to euro.

All countries, with one exception of Czech Republic, now use euro as their
official currency. Currently, the contents of the locales for these 23
countries are identical to their @euro variants.

Therefore, the @euro locales are no longer needed and with this project,
we would like to remove them through the EOF process.

DETAILS ON THE EOF

Once approved by ARC and Solaris P-Team, we will do the EOF announcement at
an S10 UR Release Notes and do the EOF execution at Navada/OpenSolaris.

The EOF announcement will point out the @euro locales, with the exception of
cs_CZ.UTF-8@euro, are obsolete and users should select the non-variant locales.

That isn't correct, the UK is not a Euro currency country and in fact
the @euro variant is likely needed in the UK more than other countries
because some people trade in both Sterling and Euro.

I'm happy for all but en_GB@euro to be removed. I can't say wither the
Czech Republic one would be useful or not but I know the en_GB@euro is,
in theory useful (I can't though say if anyone actually uses it).

> /usr/lib/locale/en_GB.ISO8859-15@euro	Obsolete Commited	(1)

GB (including Northern Ireland) is not a Euro currency country. We
haven't even got a single physical currency instantiation within the UK
yet (Scotland has 3 sets of bank notes, Northern Ireland has a set and
there is the "official" Bank of England set).

> /usr/lib/locale/en_IE.ISO8859-15@euro	Obsolete Commited	(1)

IE (aka Eire, aka Ireland (not to be confused with Northern Ireland)) is
a Euro currency country.

Let me be more correct:

-	There are 28 countries in the EU

-	There are 19 different sets of Euro coins (2 sets for Italy
as Italy and Vatikan don't share the same coins).

Well known Euro ignorants are:

-	GB (they believe they need to drive on the right side when they
	change ;-)

-	Czech republic

-	Danmark

....

Others like to get the Euro.

BTW: Greece did give up the oldest currency (Drachme) for the Euro.

No need to get offensive, lets keep the real world political opinions
out of this case (even if it is MEP election day (at least it is in the
UK) today) and stick to the facts of wither or not the @euro variants of
the locales still have a use or not.

I also believe it is an error, Darren, that en_GB.ISO8859-15@euro is
proposed to be obsoleted. That will be premature.

I removed the en_GB.ISO8859-15@euro from the list and placed the accordingly
updated spec.txt at the materials directory of the case.

Consider the spec properly amended regarding to this.

You're correct, Jörg, that Denmark and Sweden are also another EU countries
that would be premature to remove the @euro locales.

In addition to them, I've also removed en_US.ISO8859-15@euro from the list
so that the project team will not obsolete them in error.

The updated spec.txt has been placed into the materials directory of the case
and attached in this email.

EOF of @euro locales
--------------------

OVERVIEW

Solaris contains @euro locale variants for 24 locales and the most of them
were created for the transition period before the corresponding EU countries
changed their official currency to euro.

All countries, with four exceptions of Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden, and
U.K., now use euro as their official currency and the locale definitions
are the same between the @euro and non-@euro locales. Another exception case
is en_US.ISO8859-15@euro locale which we would like to keep.

With this project, the project team would like to remove the @euro locales
sans the noted exception case locales following the EOF process.

DETAILS ON THE EOF

Once approved by ARC and Solaris P-Team, we will do the EOF announcement at
an S10 UR Release Notes and do the EOF execution at Navada/OpenSolaris.

The EOF announcement will point out the @euro locales, with the exceptions of
cs_CZ.UTF-8@euro, da_DK.ISO8859-15@euro, en_GB.ISO8859-15@euro,
en_US.ISO8859-15@euro, sv_SE.ISO8859-15@euro, and sv_SE.UTF-8@euro are
obsolete and users should select the non-variant locales.

No they are 27! Monaco, Vatican City and San Marino are not members of the
EU but they have their own Euro coins. Andorra will possibly issue Euro coins later this
year.

Indeed, I agree. But in my opinion there is no need for a UK@euro locale.
For example, if country X has trade relations with India then should we
introduce a locale for this country with support for the Indian currency?

In other words, this is a real problem that has to be resolved accordingly.

It's easiest to resolve by EOFing all non-Unicode locales. But that's
not necessarily a practical solution.

/usr/bin/vi is listed as "non multi byte enabled", you would need to change
at least this program...., there are others.

We added en_GB.ISO8859-15@euro due to actual and real market requirement
if my memory serves me correct.

Hence we should have and keep it until it is no longer needed.

It was simply an error to propose to remove it in the initial proposal.

Due to the project.db file wasn't updated properly, the following email
wasn't archived. So, I'm re-sending the email to psarc-record@sac.sfbay to
properly archive the message after the project.db file update.

I'm marking this case closed approved since the timer expired and
two raised issues (one from a PSARC member) are resolved.

The final "spec.txt" can be found from the materials directory of
the case.
