Ah, there's an option conflict, sadly (-u is "--dry-run" in GNU, but "unsafe operation" in Solaris). There's no 'timeout' in /usr/bin, so why not put the timeout command in /usr/bin? Also, I think you meant 'truncate', not 'truncated'. The method that most users will have for accessing the case directory is the web interface, and reading raw nroff through it is a pain. The temp file is unlinked before mktemp exits. This is slightly better than mktemp(3C), but still introduces a race condition. Use of this option is discouraged. It's merely semantics, I think,; you can't make sure that a filename is unique other than creating it with O_EXCL so we need to unlink and we're certain that the file was unique at some point in time. I think they have the same "root" but someone didn't properly clone mktemp(). The Solaris one does a modest check to see if the name is unused. But since it doesn't hold onto that newly-created object, anyone else could slip in a millisecond after mktemp(1) exit and create that same object with nary a complaint observed. Worse, one might observe the name via readdir on the tmpdir, and then create a file with the same name after it's unlinked. It'd be better if mktemp -u did no more than a stat of name(s) it generates. The GNU mktemp(1) -u does an lstat(2) to check that the name does not exist. The Solaris mktemp(1) -u removes (unlink(2) or rmdir(2)) the object created in the process of generating the temp name. The Solaris behavior is arguably a security bug since it's possible for others to see what name was generated by constantly listing the contents of the victim's TMPDIR in the middle of the mktemp operation. Once the attacker knows what the name is, and if the attacker can write to the victim's TMPDIR (e.g., if it's /tmp), then the attacker can create a symlink with that name, which the victim is likely to follow when creating an actual object with that name. Granted, the manpage does say -u is "unsafe." So maybe it's not a security bug. I say: replace Solaris' mktemp with the GNU one.
