The materials have been submitted in the case directory and should be
reflected on the opensolaris.org shortly.

The case still needs an intern, so, volunteers welcome.

Below are the main architectural issues from the PSARC/2009/364
inception review,
to be addressed before the commitment review.

- Use of kstats as underlying stats, rather than a new way.
The project team will need to justify why kstats aren't suitable for
accumulating and reporting the counters needed to be extracted
  by dlstat and flowstat

- Drop the verb (show, show-history, reset) from the subcommand, replacing
them with simple option. This is consistent with the rest of
  {vm,io,net,..}stat commands in the system.

- Multiple issues with reset stats:
  - The loss of information accumulated since boot time may hurt the
diagnosability of problem with flows and links.
  - The action needs to be privileged.
  - suggestion: move the reset subcommand to {dl,flow}adm, with expected
effect of resetting the state of the datalink/flow, which includes the
    usage statistics thereof.

- Clarify change of interface commitment level of existing show-* statistic
related subcommands of dladm and flowadm, from 'committed' to
  'committed obsolete'

- The '-o' (+ or -) option, Be consistent with the rest of the commands in
general, (ps, dladm etc.). Use -o with the exact list of columns to
  be displayed.

- Before commitment, the man pages need to be updated to reflect the changes
  from the inception review.

I suggest getting rid of "reset" altogether. Besides being
fundamentally incompatible with SNMP instrumentation, "reset" just
isn't necessary or complete as long as you have decent delta-
calculating tools. (And I'd really rather have a good way of
computing deltas -- especially as a non-privileged user -- than having
an inaccessible way to nuke kernel counters.)

1. Summary

This case delivers two main sets of changes:
- Splitting of the data link level observability features for live and
historic usage statistics outside the administration tools dladm(1m)
  and flowadm(1m)
- Enrichment of the set of counters with finer grain visibility over
the hardware resources usage and network scheduling information.

2. Decision & Precedence Information

The project is approved as specified in reference [1].

The project may be delivered in a patch release of Solaris.

3. Interfaces

Exported Interfaces
Interface Name Classification Comments
--------------------- -------------------- --------------------------
/usr/sbin/dlstat Committed SUNWcsu
/usr/sbin/flowstat Committed SUNWcnetr

Imported Interfaces
Interface Name Classification Comments
--------------------- -------------------- --------------------------
libdladm.h Project Private /usr/lib/libdladm.so.1
libdlstat.h Project Private /usr/lib/libdladm.so.1

4. Opinion

Much of the commitment review discussion was about clarification of
the obsolescence requirements for this project.

The interfaces that were already shipped with Solaris10 Update needed
to be marked obsolete, following the regular EOF process.

Other interfaces, such as flowadm(1m) and dladm show-vnic -s were not
yet picked by a supported release of Solaris since the feature that
introduced them (Crossbow - PSARC/2006/357) was not back ported.
From a point of view of the Solaris product release train, those interfaces
can be changed or deleted without notice.
However, these interfaces made it into the last release of
OpenSolaris 2009.06, and were documented in that release's man pages.
To the extent that OpenSolaris 2009.06 can have long term support,
flowadm(1m) and dladm show-vnic -s (etc) need to be marked obsolete in the
man pages of the next OpenSolaris release.

The newly Obsolete interface should be listed there, no?

There's a garbage '>' character in there. Otherwise, this looks good to
me.

It was pointed out to me that this was due to a bug in my mail client
