4. Technical Description

A. Problem

IP-on-IB (PSARC/2001/289 and PSARC/2007/636) is implemented as the
ibd(7D) driver in Solaris. When customers face problems in bringing up
ibd(7d) instances on Solaris, they are advised to take a number of
steps to gather information about the IPoIB link that results in
usability issues.

Users currently need to run cfgadm to obtain the port GUID
information, search the system messages file to determine if the IPoIB
broadcast group is present or not, do 'ls -l' on the /dev/ibd* nodes
to determine the IB partition that an ibd instance belongs to. There
are also instances when it is necessary to obtain the P_Key
corresponding to the ibd instance and HCA that it is bound do.

These operations require a combination of commands, parsing device
names, message files and GIDs to obtain the answer.

B. Solution

We propose to add the following read-only Infiniband-specific
properties to dladm that could be displayed via 'dladm show-ib'.
These properties are well known to each ibd driver instance and it
would be a simple matter for the driver to provide them to users via
'dladm show-ib'. After discussing things with the dladm team, we are
advocating a media specific subcommand (show-ib) because these
read-only items are very specific to InfiniBand mapping of
IPonIB. Note that while broadcast is possibly on or off, the status
cannot be changed from the host (only from the IB Subnet Manager).

A sample 'dladm show-ib' output for an ibd instance would be like below:

LINK	PROPERTY	VALUE POSSIBLE

ibd0	partition	ffff --
ibd0	broadcast	on on,off
ibd0	guid 2c9030001c86c	--

These properties will apply only to data links of type DL_IB. The
dladm manpage changes are submitted in the materials directory.

A micro/patch binding is asserted for this proposal.

I don't have a problem with the properties themselves, but the output
format seems rather strange. Presumably, the properties will show up in
show-linkprop in a format similar (but not quite the same) as that as
shown above, so it doesn't seem valuable to have this type of
one-property per line format. Instead, I'd expect these properties to
show up as follows in the show-linkprop output:

LINK	PROPERTY	PERM VALUE DEFAULT POSSIBLE
ibd0	partition	r- ffff -- --
ibd0	broadcast	r- on on on,off
ibd0	guid r- 2c9030001c86c	-- --
ibd1	partition	r- ...

Then, to make things more legible for IB-specific output (analogous to
the show-ether Ethernet-specific output), something like this in
show-ib:

LINK	PARTITION	BROADCAST	GUID
ibd0	ffff on 2c9030001c86c
ibd1	abcd off 2134123412341
ibd2	...

That way, we don't have a subcommand that is almost totally without
value beyond what show-linkprop shows, and one can get a nice IB
overview without too much clutter with show-ib.

the word property in the context of dladm heavily suggests a link
property that
can be set/gotten by dladm {set,get}-linkprop

are these link props or are they rather non configurable attributes of
the IB class of links?

Seb,

Maybe this is better, but I have question ...

I imagine the one-line format works fine for the three properties we
have now because they fit in 80 or so columns. But if for
some reason we added more later would this present a problem with
output that is too wide?

Would we have to do something akin to what show-ether does? I gather
you sort of get the basic info without -x. And then get "extended"
stuff with -x ending up as multi-line output.

I just want to understand if we are possibly committing to
a future -x type solution too, if we go this way.

They are the latter (non configurable).
Is there a different terminolgy that should be used for that?

Right, either a -x, or another -<something> that describes a specific
mode of output where a different subset of columns are displayed, or
simply that there would be optional columns that are only displayed if
specified explicitly with -o. There could be a number of acceptable
ways to deal with that.

On that note, your case did not specify the full syntax of show-ib. I
suspect it looks almost identical to the other show-* subcommands, but
I'm just making sure.

Hmm, are you sure that these are not simply link properties that happen
to be read-only (implemented in the linkprop.c libdladm file)? Your
earlier response to my mail implies this. I don't see why these
wouldn't be read-only link properties.

Some background here: the original draft proposal for this case was for a
set of read-only link properties, which Sowmini and I (and perhaps others)
commented on. I asked Ted/Venki to instead build a show-ib subcommand
because (a) it follows what we've already done with other media and (b) it
seemed more convenient given that none of the things being modeled as
properties could be administratively controlled. (I never saw the updated
materials with the proposed output from show-ib; I agree with Seb's
suggestion for the new output format.)

Regarding also having administrative link properties: I see limited value
in exposing inherently read-only things as link properties, as they
clutter up the show-linkprop output and cannot be operated on by any of
the other linkprop subcommands -- and the set of possible values is likely
something better explained in a manpage. This is why the dladm/wifi case
that introduced link properties had both a show-wifi subcommand and a
smaller set of link properties that could be configured. (Note that there
are still cases when a property may be read-only -- e.g., it may be that
the property can only be set by some subset of drivers, or only if other
bits of configuration are set a certain way.) I will concede that there
are already some inherently read-only properties in dladm (grr).

Okay, and I was evidently misled by Ted's acknowledgment of my previous
mail message suggesting both show-linkprop and show-ib output. For the
record, the proposal is for a show-ib subcommand only, and no link
properties, right? Can the project team supply an updated proposal
which clarifies some of the confusion and brings the output format up to
date with what was discussed?

I was a bit surprised to see this case filed since I thought Ted, Venki,
Sowmini and I were still discussing the specifics of the proposal.

Ted: can the IB team tie up these loose ends with Sowmini and myself
offline, then come back to PSARC with an updated proposal? This shouldn't
take very long.

Thanks,

agreed. I also was thrown off by the references to linkprop in the PSARC

Okay, I've gone ahead and marked the case "waiting need spec" while the
new spec is being generated off-line.

It sounds like the case owner should mark this "waiting need spec" in

Seb,

There is this change bar line in the revised man page:

| dladm show-ib [[-p] -o field[,...]] [ipoib-link]

which I think is more or less what show-ether has
(modulo the -x)

Seb,

I may not understanding something about the terminology,
but I thought I said that. What is the right
way to say "non-configurable" and/or "read-only"
attribute w.r.t. dladm?

Should the case not call them "dladm property name"?
Should it say something else?

My apologies if I am overlooking the obvious.

I think the source of much of the confusion is the similarity between
the proposed show-ib command and the existing show-linkprop. Would it
not be simpler to have the output as

LINK PARTITION	BROADCAST	GUID <...>
ibd0 ffff on 2c9030001c86c

(which also allows for more lines for ibd1 etc.)

Yes this is more or less what Seb advocated in an earlier
message. And I am agreeable to this, but I just want
to be sure I am not missing something from the messages
from Kais and Seb in terms of terminology.

The confusion isn't over whether or not these are read-only; but about
whether or not you're implementing link properties that are visible
through show-linkprop, or just using a private mechanism to obtain some
values that are only displayed by show-ib. The term "link property" (as
described in the dladm(1M) man page) refers to things displayed by
show-linkprop.

In any case, we can sort this out off-list and make sure that we have
the details disambiguated in the new spec.
