4. Technical Description

The legacy Smartcard removal project missed one interface that has never been
delivered as part of OpenSolaris releases but has been delivered on Solaris 10
and SX:CE releases.

With the P-Team approval to integrate PSARC/2004/678 and thus remove
libsmartcard the libpcsclite.so shim from SUNWpcsclite that provices
the PC/SC Lite API can no longer be built or delivered. The
libpcsclite library has never been delivered for OpenSolaris binary
releases because it depends on libsmartcard which has never been delivered
for OpenSolaris binary releases.

This case is filed as closed-approved-automatic is there really is nothing
to do but recored that this interface from the JDS consolidation was missed
in the original EOF cases. The one issue is that PC/SC lite was the
recommended API from the EOF case for libsmartcard (PSARC/2004/678), however
since those were filed the upstream FOSS communities developing for Smartcard
appear to have changed direction to PKCS#15 and other supported methods in
OpenSC.

With the soon to happen demise of SVR4 based builds and SX:CE being
completely replaced by OpenSolaris /dev repository this is defacto EOF and
removed anyway.

If SX:CE wasn't being replaced the removal actually makes it easier for end
users/admins to install the native libpcsclite if anyway. It also
makes it easier for us to potentially deliver OpenSC to an OpenSolaris
and Solaris Next repository in the future.

Sun Ray and Sun Secure Global Desktop users have other options for
use of smartcard devices - particularly when interacting with Microsoft Windows
client applications being displayed via them.

The pcsclite library did not contain the code from libpcsclite but something
different that does not work for all applications I tried. Is there a plan to
integrate the real libpcsclite?
