EOF for Douglas Platform (TAD,SPARCLE)
--------------------------------------

Approximately 2.5 years ago, we integrated the basic platmod support
for the Douglas platform (PSARC 2007/152), which is the Tadpole SPARCLE
laptop. These laptops contain an UltraSPARC-IIe or IIi processor from 500 to
650 MHz.

Even at that time, the platforms were a bit on the underpowered side.

This laptop was very briefly marketed by Sun as the Sun Ultra 3, but it
would appear that very few units were sold under this brand. (Those units
shipped with a customized version of Solaris 10, provided by Tadpole.)
Note that the Sun Ultra 3 was also used to cover mobile laptops from
Naturetech, which are not affected by this case.

However, the work was never complete, and most notably the power management
code was never integrated, which is a significant feature deficiency.
Unfortunately, the project team never found time to complete this work. And
as processing speeds have increased, the platform has slowly declined into
irrelevance.

Additionally, the driver for the framebuffer used by this platform is
not integrated into OpenSolaris, and there is no plan to resolve this. Hence,
with the plan to EOF SXCE, this platform will essentially become mostly
useless with OpenSolaris and Solaris.Next. (You'd still be able to use it
in text mode, but I think most folks would agree that this is not a very
usable situation for a laptop.)

Hence, the project team would like to ask for permission to simply remove
the support for the underlying platmod. As this platform has never been
supported by production version of Solaris, we believe we can do this within
the context of a fast track, with Minor patch binding, without advance
notification.

We will also remove the /platform/TAD,SPARCLE/ platform directories and
associated links.

I didn't see any +1s on this, although the case timed out. Can I get a

Thanks.

And I'm aware that there is a "Tadpole" based on UltraSPARC IIIi
that is still in use in some TX environments. I suspect such
use would also carry over to Solaris Next with TX. How does
this case affect that "Tadpole"? And if it does, have you checked
with the TX folk on how that might affect those customers?

It doesn't effect the Ultra IIIi systems at all... although we have
never had support for them in Nevada. (They would have been identified
as TAD,Viper most likely, although this "implementation" name covered
some wildly differing Tadpole units, including the Bullfrog and Bullfrog
2 systems, which were not really laptops at all but rather "luggable"
behemoths weighing in at over 20 lbs. Bullfrog 2 didn't even support a
battery, since putting a battery in a system with a pair of UltraSPARC
IIIi CPUs was ... not practical.)

Are you sure that these systems are Tadpole systems? Naturetech had
some UltraSPARC IIIi systems that were also sold under the Sun Ultra 3
brand.

Gary,

The Tadpole systems that are listed in the DTW overview are VM2100's.
They are apparently still being used for Solaris 10 deployments. The
software running in these is apparently Solaris 10 with TX enabled.

This looks like a ruggedized version of the Bullfrog II. In any case,
it is *not* impacted by this change. It is also most likely *not*
supported by the stock versions of Nevada.

It does not appear that Tadpole is still offering the SPARCLE. They do
have the SPARCbook on their website still, and this is also based on the
UltraSPARC IIi/IIe, but this product line uses a different platmod and
uname -i, and is also not affected by this case. (That said, I'd be
rather surprised if you can actually purchase a SPARCbook anymore...)

Having read this case and PSARC/2007/152 I'm happy to give my +1 for
this case EOF and removal case. I see no need to an announcement on
this since it only ever appeared in the ONNV derived products
