It's not clear from these materials if the path is simply being exported as a committed interface for other projects to use if it exists, or whether it's actually being delivered by the tomcat project when that software is installed, but not running. As tomcat6 is started with 'webservd' credential it's not able to write into /var/run. I think it's not possible to do this later in start method. I mean to combine 'su' command with 'ppriv'. The new planned tool - Web Stack Enterprise Manager therefore should be able to work on both Solairs and Linux. It is regrettable that although *Solaris has its own architecture for process/service management and instrumentation, the choice is to use the archaic Linux one. If the known consumers were all upstream porting efforts I could easily buy the (oft lofted) cost argument for using the lowest common denominator. But one of them is Sun XXproprietaryXX, which seems like an odd choice from this external view point. Use pcred(1) and ppriv(1). Or better yet, keep things the way they are, don't bother with the PID file, modify the PID file consumers to use SMF interfaces to find the service process contract and its members' PIDs. Tomcat will be started as it's now (no su/pcred/ppriv). It will be just allowed to create pid file in /var/tomcat6/logs directory as it was already stated. Tomcat started via SMF doesn't allow multiple instances as CATALINA_BASE is set to /var/tomcat6 and is not changeable. To have more Tomcat SMF instances is beyond this case. If ordinary user starts it own instance of Tomcat like this: "CATALINA_BASE=/home/user/mytomcat /usr/tomcat6/bin/catalina.sh start" Pid file is not created (unless CATALINA_PID environment variable is defined). While the purpose of the +1 is to indicate that review occurred, I've interpreted that it is still necessary because it indicates that the review occurred *and* the reviewer is satisfied with the results. I think there may never have been a stricture against creating PID files in /var/run, even though SMF obviates the need for them, but even so, this case should absolutely NOT be seen as establishing precedent that it's OK to have PID files, because: a) PID files can make it difficult to have multiple enabled instances of your service -- impossible, actually, if the PID file path is hardcoded; b) PID files are not needed anyways, since you can always find your running services' processes by using process contracts; c) PID files are ugly, and not the SMF way; d) PID files often cause headaches, depending on the implementation (e.g., if one process crashes and leaves behind a PID file, and by the time a new process starts the old process' PID has been reused and the new instance then refuses to start); e) ... I could probably go on, but let's not. PID files are not a good mechanism at all. (a) is fatal, IMO; PID files should be forbidden by default, and you should have to seek ARC and c-team permission to integrate code that uses PID files. Nico --
