I'm not entirely sure that PSARC is the right place to deal with this.
Would LSARC be better prepared to provide a meaningful review of it?
(It *looks* reasonable to me, and I'd +1, but I'd like LSARC to have a
chance at it first.)

Hi Garrett,

Thank you for your prompt review and +1!
I think PSARC is the adequate review body since the recent similar
case ([2] xkbc for iBus) and also all other Input Method related
cases were reviewed under PSARC.

+1 on this case, but I have lingering concerns over the higher-level
architecture of input method. There are too many frameworks (iiimf,
scim, and ibus), and users shouldn't need to be made to manually switch
between implementations depending on what features may or may not be
available in one or the other (do they do this by trial and error?).

The fact that the state of the art appears to be ibus and that it is not
the default on Solaris is a detriment to projects such as this that are
integrating new features for ibus.

Hasegawa-san, I believe you were both the case owner and the project
team for the ibus integration. What are the plans to make ibus the
default in Solaris, and to EOF the other two frameworks? Has this in
fact already happened, and I simply missed it?

Thanks,
-Seb

Oh, somehow I removed PSARC-ext@sun.com alias when I replied this...
When iBus becomes more stable in future, scim may be removed.

Hi all,

system/input-method/ibus/sunpinyin (SUNWibus-sunpinyin) package
has been integrated in snv_135 which is first dev build after
2010.03.

Yes, the plan is to make ibus default IM framework for next release
and sunpinyin is planned to be the default Simplified Chinese IM.
At this point we have no concrete plan about when removing scim/iiimf
from OpenSolaris.

Thanks,
Fuyuki

No problem.

> When iBus becomes more stable in future, scim may be removed.

2009/499 also discussed the need for feature parity between iiimf and
ibus (specifically regarding keyboard layout switching for European
layouts). Those details are obviously beyond the scope of this case,
but my main concern was that the more enhancements are made to ibus
(such as this case) and the more mature it gets, the more antiquated our
current default becomes, and the less it makes sense to maintain it as
the default. I don't intend to discuss those issues in detail here, but
only to state my general concern.

Thanks,
-Seb

P.S.: When you approve this case and edit the IAM file, please fix the
date format in there, it's currently unparsable by the SAC tools.
