Project Description This project continues on LSARC 2009/475 and 2009/651 to provide a newer version of GNOME, as part of the Solaris Desktop, targeted for Nevada and OpenSolaris. More formally, this project will integrate GNOME 2.30 along with some other components that are not currently part of the official GNOME community release. 2.2. Risks and Assumptions 2.2.1. Schedule This project is targeted to be bundled with Nevada and OpenSolaris with an intended integration date of Nevada build 140 (May/17/10), of the current Solaris OS release schedule. This is for a minor release only. 2.2.2. Accessibility Accessibility is still a key concern in the GNOME desktop. Although the community has contributed a great deal to the project, the core parts of the desktop may not be fully accessible. In the upstream community, A11Y is moving away from using CORBA and towards using D-Bus. GNOME 2.30 is the last official release that will support the CORBA implementation with D-Bus replacing CORBA in GNOME 3.0. 2.2.3. Library consolidation The GNOME community is in the process of consolidating a number of external libraries into GTK+, and deprecating a number of libraries. This is known as Project Ridley [8] within the GNOME community. The plan is that GNOME 3.0 will have a much smaller set of more stable Platform libraries. For example, the following libraries are planned for deprecation in the GNOME 3.0 time frame. o libart_lgpl o libbonobo o libbonoboui o libgnome o libgnomeui o libgnomeprint o libgnomeprintui o libgnomecanvas o libglade o libIDL o gnome-vfs o audiofile o esound o ORBit2 o There is discussion about replacing GConf with DConf, although the timeframe seems undecided by the upstream community. Separately, the GTK+ community plans to release GTK+ 3.0 this year and there are plans that an upcoming GNOME release will depend on GTK+ 3.0. Current plans are that GTK+ 3.0 will not be ABI compatible with GTK+ 2.x, so when this change happens it will require some significant work to integrate. 2.2.4 GNOME Shell and OpenGL GNOME Shell will likely be the default window manager from GNOME 3.0 and it requires OpenGL support. This may be a problem for environments that do not support OpenGL such as Sun Ray. To solve the problem, the GNOME community proposes that GNOME 2 will still be available in long term stable maintenance mode. Environments lacking of OpenGL support can continue to use GNOME 2. The Desktop team is working with the upstream community to determine the best course of action to provide a modern desktop on systems without OpenGL support. 2.2.5 The adoption of upower and udisks From GNOME 2.28, GNOME community starts to use upower and udisks (previously called DeviceKit-power and DeviceKit-disks) to replace HAL. A significant amount of work has been done for GNOME 2.30 and the dependency of HAL will be fully removed in GNOME 3.0. Gnome-power-manager now depends on upower and has abandoned the dependency of HAL. Because upower is not shipped in Solaris currently, we plan to continue to ship gnome-power-manager 2.24 in GNOME 2.30. Other applications still depend on HAL optionally for GNOME 2.30. So this is not a big issue for now, but may be a risk for the integration of some GNOME components in the future. 2.2.6 The packaging system From this release, the packages will not be delivered as SRV4 packages anymore, but instead delivered through IPS package server only. Yes that is the plan. However, GNOME Shell is really more than "just metacity". You can think of it as metacity + gnome-panel + gnome-applets. There should be no problem running the rest of GNOME 3.x with GNOME 2.x metacity, gnome-panel and gnome-applets for OpenGL users. Though, to be more accurate, GNOME Shell will likely also provide some other miscellaneous features. For example, there are plans to integrate IM features directly into shell to make chatting with others more integrated with the desktop and to add more sophisticated "recent documents" features directly into GNOME-Shell. So users using the old GNOME 2.x metacity, gnome-panel and gnome-applets may miss out on some of these usability features - they can still run an IM program to chat, but it just may not be integrated into the desktop as directly or as nicely as in GNOME-Shell. Since GNOME 3.x is developing a different "applet" model, there may be complications moving forward backporting new applet-like features back to the GNOME 2.x infrastructure. It is hard to say if this will be much of an issue or not. It mostly depends if new GNOME 3.x applet-like things get written and there is a desire to backport the features. There also may be work to keep the GNOME 2.x applets properly integrated with the GNOME 3.x desktop as things change. For example, the power-management applet talks via D-Bus to the power-manager daemon, and if the GNOME 3.x power-manager daemon changes, it might require updating the GNOME 2.x applet in order to keep using it with GNOME 3.x. I would say if this becomes a resource issue, there may be a need to enhance the GNOME 2.x panel to work with GNOME 3.x applets. The GNOME Desktop team is working with both the upstream community and the team at Sun responsible for HAL and we are working to keep pace. However, it is probably too early to provide any real concrete plans. The upstream community keeps changing their design and direction, and their plans do not seem very mature. I think we need to wait and let the dust settle a bit more to find what work is needed in this area. I am still interested in creating a framework that allows to correctly deal with all possible constraints with CD/DVD/BD writing (even appending to a multi session media that requires to be able to do a forced unmount of the medium that is going to be appended. The information I provided was only about the X code, which only uses HAL for input devices, as HAL never provided any useful functionality for video display devices, and X doesn't access other devices directly. The Desktop team does not really make branding decisions. In terms of how the desktop layout is designed, the XDesign team defines how the desktop looks. OpenSolaris has always had a more Linux-like 2-panel layout. I am not sure about the future for Solaris or whether any possible future Solaris releases will adopt the OpenSolaris look or keep something more similar to the JDS single-panel look. Of course, users and sysadmins can always modify the system default GConf settings to make GNOME to have a single-panel. If it adds value to Sun Ray to have a single-panel, the Sun Ray team could decide to make the SRSS installer modify the default settings to change GNOME to use a single-panel when used with SRSS if that makes the most sense for Sun Ray users. It might be worthwhile to bring up this issue on GNOME community forums and find out if there might be an interest in making it easier for sysadmins and users to switch between different common panel layouts. It seems like it would be a good enhancement request. However, I am not sure if such a suggestion would gain much traction since the GNOME community is moving towards GNOME-Shell which has replaced the panel with a new user interface paradigm. At any rate, branding and business choices like this are, I believe, outside of the scope of ARC. USB team which is in charge of HAL is responsible for the porting of upower and udisks to Solaris. Developers from the USB team and Desktop team have had a few meetings with Randy. The current plan is to make it workable and put back the patch to the community but there is no plan to integrated it into Solaris before the release of the Solaris Next. As for udisks, the USB team just started to investigate it but no real porting work has happened yet. Could you please provide more information about the specific changes you are making? Can you work with the gnome-arc team to update the interface-table.txt file so that it shows any interface changes that you plan to make to fix this problem? Once the interface-table.txt file is updated in the arc-documents SVN repository, I will update it in the ARC case directory, and then we should be able to get John to provide a +1 and close this case as approved. Note that we can get the ARC approval before the actual fix is implemented and integrated into spec-files. We just cannot integrate into Nevada until we make the change so that what we integrate conforms to what was agreed in the ARC review. So, the interface-table.txt file can be updated quickly to get the process moving. Can you work with the gnome-arc team to update the interface-table.txt file so that it shows any interface changes that you plan to make to fix this problem? Once the interface-table.txt file is updated in the arc-documents SVN repository, I will update it in the ARC case directory, and then we should be able to get John to provide a +1 and close this case as approved. Note that we can get the ARC approval before the actual fix is implemented and integrated into spec-files. We just cannot integrate into Nevada until we make the change so that what we integrate conforms to what was agreed in the ARC review. So, the interface-table.txt file can be updated quickly to get the process moving. Since it was moved to the evolution project-private directory (/usr/lib/evolution/%version), it is no longer specified in the interface table at all.
