What happens when it is run in a Zone that is part of a processor pool ? I think the "-a" output won't actually be "all installed". My concern here is that this command could depending how it is implemented be very misleading on Solaris because of the processor virualisation and resource management functionality we have. It doesn't work with the /usr/bin/getconf on current OpenSolaris builds, but you are correct it does with with the ks93 built in getconf However this case isn't about what "scripts" should or should not do and any mention of POSIX or POSIX features isn't releveant. It is about delivering the GNU coreutils as they are. Several people in the GNU community obviously thought the nproc tool was useful otherwise it wouldn't be in the coreutils package. The last person who tried to suggest that parts of coreutils promote unportable scripting was kicked off the coreutils list and got a few interesting other lists subscriptions, such as the famous nazi.org SIEG HEIL list. The coreutils team and McGrath/Drepper are mortal enemies; neither team will add a comment in their own documentation that the other team is right. Forget that quickly. The stability level of nproc is "unstable" and interfaces work on Solaris, which is the only platform we're concerned with. If an end user is comfortable using an interface which is disclosed as unstable, and does the due diligence to see that the interface is available on the platforms he or she wishes to use, then that is their prerogative. Failing to deliver an interface because nobody else (or nobody else but Linux) has would be deadlock.
