Subject: lndir [PSARC/2010/219 Self Review] To: PSARC-ext@Sun.Com Cc: Alan.Coopersmith@Sun.COM Bcc: one-pager-list@sac.sfbay one-pager-log@sac.sfbay sac-bar@sac.sfbay I am sponsoring this case for myself and have marked it closed automatic since it simply passes through a widely distributed utility from X.Org. If anyone thinks more in-depth review is needed, let me know and I can convert it to a fasttrack. -Alan Coopersmith- alan.coopersmith@sun.com Oracle Solaris Platform Engineering: X Window System Template Version: @(#)sac_nextcase 1.70 03/30/10 SMI This information is Copyright (c) 2010, Oracle and/or its affiliates. Technical Description This case delivers the lndir utility from X.Org as /usr/bin/lndir To quote from its man page: The lndir program makes a shadow copy todir of a directory tree fromdir, except that the shadow is not populated with real files but instead with symbolic links pointing at the real files in the fromdir directory tree. This is usually useful for maintaining source code for different machine architectures. You create a shadow directory containing links to the real source, which you will have usually mounted from a remote machine. You can build in the shadow tree, and the object files will be in the shadow directory, while the source files in the shadow directory are just sym- links to the real files. lndir was originally created as a utility for building the X Window System but was found to be useful for other things so is now commonly packaged and included in OS distros, including from a quick survey: OEL, RHEL, Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and DragonFly BSD. Since this case adds a new command with no compatibility issues, it qualifies for a patch release binding, though no backport is planned at this time. Should it be backported to an SVR4-packaged release, it will be included with the other X11 build utilities like imake in the SUNWxwopt package.
