I'm sponsoring this case on behalf of Jan Setje-Eilers
as a fast-track, with timeout set to 07/23/2010.

1. Introduction

This case requests the removal and EOF of the installgrub(1M)
     support for floppy disks.

     Minor release binding is requested.

2. Discussion

installgrub(1M) is responsible of installing the GRUB bootloader
on a given partition and/or on the master boot record of a storage
device. Along with understanding and supporting the standard
Solaris partition, installgrub is capable of handling floppy disks
which are a special label-free case of pcfs/FAT.

Since the EOL of the v20z, we do not support any systems equipped
with a floppy disk. Floppy disks are a dying technology, surpassed
by USB flash memory sticks and CD/DVD ROM/WORM and RW, both of
which can be used (with the vast majority of BIOS releases) to
     bootstrap a system.

Removing the support for installing GRUB on floppy disks
simplifies the installgrub code and makes it cleaner for a future
transition to new major versions of the boot loader.

3. Interface table

PSARC 2004/454 states the installgrub(1M) interface as "Evolving"

Passing /dev/rdiskette to installgrub post remove will produce a
message indicating that floppies are no longer supported.

It does not (actually, the usb live image is a UFS filesystem).
Testing the new bits with usbgen/usbcopy has been part of the testing
matrix.

In general, the floppy support was 'activated' by detecting the target
device as:

is_floppy = strncmp(device, "/dev/rdsk", strlen("/dev/rdsk")) &&
            strncmp(device, "/dev/dsk", strlen("/dev/dsk"));

so I don't think we should miss any scenario with USB media (without
limiting to the liveusb case).
We are keeping the PCFS support.

Thanks,
