I am sponsoring this closed approved automatic case for Janice Chang. It adds one SMF property to an already approved fasttrack (PSARC 2010/048). Binding is minor. If anyone feels this doesn't qualify for self review, I'll convert it to a fasttrack.

4. Technical Description

4.1. Description

ndmpd implements the Solaris Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) service, providing backup and restore functionality per the NDMP protocol (see PSARC 2007/397).

At startup, ndmpd discovers local tape devices to be presented to the data management application (DMA). Currently, only System V tape drives are presented (and Berkeley, or BSD, drives are not). This has worked well with the DMA configurations currently supported by Solaris ndmpd. However, it turns out that one new configuration requires BSD tape drives to be used for restore when drives are locally attached to the NDMP data server. Hence it makes sense for ndmpd to discover only BSD drives for this configuration.

It is proposed that a new SMF property, "drive-type", be added to the ndmpd service. This new property allows the administrator to specify the type of tape drive to be discovered and presented to the DMA. By default, "drive-type" will be set to "sysv". "bsd" will be the only other legitimate value. The new property will be Committed.

4.2. Bug/RFE number(s):

6960332 - provide both kinds of BSD and SysV tape semantics to the clients

4.6. Doc Impact: Proposed ndmp man page change (will work with documentation writer on this):

The following property can only be set when using the
ndmpadm enable or ndmpadm disable command:

I incorrectly stated that this adds an SMF property to PSARC 2010/048
when in fact it adds a property to PSARC 2007/397. The description in
the document correctly specifies the original case.
